About Slide Rock State Park

Pendley Homestead was originally part of Slide Rock State Park in the Gunnison National Forest canyon. The land was acquired under the Homestead Act of 1910 by Frank L. Pendly, who came to Canyon in 1907 and purchased the land in 1910 through the Homeward Act.

This enabled Pendley to plant his first apple orchard in 1912 and began the agricultural development that has dominated the terrain ever since. Where others failed, his pioneering innovation led to the establishment of a unique irrigation system that is still used in the park. He also kept farm animals and grew gardens and produce, which enabled the construction of his second orchard in 1913 and the third in 1914.

Pendley followed suit and built rustic holiday homes for vacationers and tourists in 1933, of which there were more than 100 in the park. The town is also home to one of Ohio's most popular tourist attractions, Slide Rock State Park. There is a strong influence that promotes the recreational use of this canyon, and there is an extensive network of paths and a number of hiking trails, as well as a variety of picnic areas and other amenities.

There is also a historic orchard, which produces delicious apples in autumn, as well as a number of small farms. Slide Rock State Park is located north of Sedona near Oak Creek and offers scenic views of the Great Smoky Mountains, Ohio River and Grand Canyon.

The park is managed in partnership with Coconino National Forest by the Arizona Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forest Service. The vegetation of the highlands in the area is characterized by oaks, pines, oaks, birches and Wright pines. The vegetation on the banks consists of grasses and shrubs as well as a variety of other plant and animal species.

Birds include blackbirds, owls, falcons, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, ospreys and other birds of prey, as well as bighorn sheep.

The park is named after the slippery stretch of stream that borders the farmstead, and visitors can wade down the stream or slide down a smooth natural water slide. The bathing area is located on the eastern edge of the national forest, which is jointly managed by the US Forest Service and the Department of Natural Resources of New Mexico.

Arizona State Parks bought the park property from the Arizona Parklands Foundation on July 10, 1985 and opened it in October 1987. The park was entered into the National Register of Historic Places on December 23, 1991. Together, the area has seen the making of many Hollywood movies, including "The Big Lebowski," "Brokeback Mountain" and "Daredevil," as well as numerous television series.

The Slide Rock bathing area is located about 1.5 km from the stream, which is bordered by the Slide Rock Trail, a 60 metre long slippery shoot cut into the sandstone. The slide is one of the most popular in the state of Arizona and the only one in Arizona with a height difference of over 30 meters.

Please note that all activities in the water are endangered by users and glass containers are not allowed in the bathing area.

Oak Creek is regularly stocked with rainbow trout, but where there are no swimmers, fishing is not allowed. Fishermen under 14 years of age require a valid Arizona fishing license and adults a valid ID.

A parking lot is available at the entrance to the parking lot, which is served daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by "first come, first served."

Ramada is covered and can hold about fifty people, but propagandists, charcoal and wood fires are prohibited at all times. There is a parking space at the entrance to Slide Rock State Park for $5 per person or $10 per vehicle.

Ramadas can be reserved for a fee, but reservations are not accepted in the summer months at Slide Rock State Park. Each month, the Ramadas receive a parking space for 5 dollars per person or 10 dollars per vehicle for each Ramada.

During this period, propane grills, charcoal and wood fires are prohibited, but there is also the possibility of using a fireplace, picnic areas or other outdoor activities. The park features a variety of short hiking trails, including nature trails, and there are also a number of picnic areas with picnic tables and other amenities.

All types of glass containers are strictly prohibited and these areas are managed on a packaging - interior - packaging basis. On the way there are various agricultural tools that have been used historically on the farms, as well as a collection of old agricultural tools. The asphalt flat path runs through the park and is suitable for all visitors, with a variety of picnic areas, picnic tables and other amenities.

This extremely popular area features a natural water slide in Oak Creek, and there is a primitive path down to it. The park has a variety of picnic areas, picnic tables and other amenities, as well as a number of water slides and waterfalls.

Visitors must stay on the west side of the stream, and the trail starts at the Apple Pack Barn and leads down to a small pedestrian bridge that crosses the stream. After crossing the footbridges, walk north on a sandstone shelf and stand shortly before descending again.

During the summer months, many sun-worshippers will use this part of the route for sunbathing, and during your hike you can admire a historic hut on the west side of this stream. In connection with the waterwheel and the hoses, the original owners generated electricity for the farm.

If you decide to climb the wall, you can explore the remote area where the route becomes more primitive. You reach an eight-foot wall, which can be surrounded by trees, rocks and even a small stream and some small streams.
