About Putnam Memorial State Park

Putnam State Park is an excellent place to study Garnet Shale, a silvery, medium to coarse grained slate containing garnet, moscovitides and mica. Although it has no precious stone qualities, it is one of the most abundant minerals in the state of Connecticut and a great mineral source for the Connecticut State Museum. Similarly, another mineral, yarn, is used in Connecticut, but it is made by hand in a history lesson.

Shale is a type of metamorphic rock that has been exposed to intense heat, pressure and hot liquids.

Shale by definition contains a high proportion of platy-containing minerals, elongated minerals such as garnet, moscovitides and mica. This allows the slate to easily decay into thin flakes or plates and cause the formation of a thick, silvery, medium to coarse-grained slate.

Rowe's Slate is located near the monument at the entrance to the park and when you go down the path to the right, you will see several large boulders on the left. The excavations were huge and were carried out on a large monument to the soldiers of the Revolutionary War.

These boulders are said to have served as a foundation for the soldiers "homes. Other stone piles found are also believed to be the remains of bread ovens built by the soldier.

South-facing rock shelters like this one were used by the Indians because they were warmed by the low sun in winter and protected from the high sun in summer. Although it is called a cave, it is actually a refuge formed by a glacier. Another geological site is a small rock - Philippshohle, about 1000 feet from the entrance of the cave.

The winter camp of the Continental Army was located on the east side of this rock cellar, about 500 meters from the entrance of the cave. The site consists of a reconstructed log cabin, a small campfire and the remains of an old hut with a fireplace and a hearth. In recent years, the rocks surrounding the shelter have been turned into slate, eroding this part of the park, but it is still intact.
