About Red Top Mountain State Park
Visitors can bring or rent their own boat from the Marine Park or bring it for free. Red Top Mountain State Park, a 1,000-acre state park, is ideal for swimming, boating and fishing.
A 12-kilometre trail leads through the park, which provides access to a reconstructed log cabin from the 1860s, which is occupied on Saturdays. The lodge, restaurant and meeting facilities of the park make it a popular destination for families and children of all ages. There are suitable wheelchairs and strollers at the lodge, Marine Park and Red Top Mountain State Park.
Red Top Mountain, named after the rich red colour of the soil due to its high iron ore content, was once an important iron mining area. There are gravel roads accessible for hikers and cyclists, and parking lots and trails are located on the north and south sides of the parking lot and trails. Follow the signs to the parking lots and hiking trails and park at the park entrance.
This picturesque trail leads through a historic area, which was home to an active iron mining community in the mid-19th century. This route starts at the hut parking lot and shares a path with the Sweet Gum Trail Loop, then branches off and leads to the Whitetail Trail. Along the way you will have the opportunity to observe native wildlife and an abundance of native plants.
The trail starts at the porch of the park's visitor center, turns one mile north, crosses Lodge Road, and then winds through the woods to the Whitetail Trail Loop. The path then turns south, crosses the hiking trail and crosses the hut road again before turning north.
At the end of the tour, hikers return to the same route that is one mile from the veranda. The path is named after several farmsteads that once ran along its stretch, and it follows the shores of the lake along its length.
The trail is yellow and not accessible by bike, so start on this beautiful trail and the Sweet Gum Trail will be sharp to the left.
This short asphalt path starts at the hut parking lot and goes around the loop to the lodge and along the shores of Lake Allatoona. You can enjoy a spring-fed stream, a viewing platform and a picturesque view of the lake. This path is red and not accessible by bike, but it is ADA accessible along the entire length.
The centre of attention is the 1869 Vaughn lodge, which is located directly on the hiking trail. Visitors can enjoy special programs at the hut and relax on benches along the way to the coast and enjoy a special program hut.
The trail starts in the parking lot of the visitor center and leads to the southern end of Red Top Mountain State Park and also runs north. The path is not signposted and bicycles are not allowed, so the path returns from the visitor centre and then follows the coast for about a kilometre north before returning to a visitor centre.
The Sweet Rubber Trail also leads from the Visitor Centre to a campsite and campers can drive along the park's path by car. The section is marked with yellow and red wounds, and the same trail that Homestead and Sweet Gum share is also on the east side of Red Top Mountain State Park, where it is connected to the Trailhead.
The trail is not accessible by bike, but it is accessible from the visitor centre and the trailhead and is accessible to hikers and mountain bikers.
