About Channahon Parkway State Park

Channahon State Park is one of the most popular state parks in the state of Georgia and the second largest state park in Georgia. Ch Hannahon is an Indian word that means "confluence of water" and refers to Channah on the north side of Lake Champlain north of Atlanta.

The Channahon Access was founded in 1932 as part of the State Park, known as the Ch Hannahon State Parkway. The canal was officially closed in 1933 with the opening of the Illinois Waterway.

The civil defence service set up by the Ministry of the Interior was tasked with cleaning and repairing the canal, but this and its surroundings were extremely neglected. The park was built by a young man whose large shelter of hand-carved beams and floors still stands as a monument to the young men who built it. C & C restored the 6 and 7 locks at the Channahon, as well as many other locks in the park.

Interpreters are always on hand to provide information and answer questions at Channahon Parkway State Park and other public parks in the area.

Each camp has a fire ring, picnic table and barbecue, and there are drinking fountains, pits and toilets on the campsites. The camping permit must be obtained through the information centre and you must bring your equipment on foot to the camper that has access to your vehicle.

Canoeists can paddle up to 15 miles on the channel between Channahon and Morris, but the beautiful scenery between the two points may only be overshadowed by the abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities.

Due to the fragility of the canal dam, only electric motors are allowed, but bass, toad, bluethroat, catfish and bullhead are waiting patiently to test the skills of even the best anglers. Fishermen of all ages can fish the Illinois, Michigan, Canal and DuPage River, as well as Lake Michigan and Illinois River.

Take a hot dog, a cup of coffee and a bottle of water and relax on the water's edge for an afternoon fishing.

Barbecue and picnic tables are scattered along the park's banks, and the cool, shady surroundings provide the perfect setting for a hot dog, a cup of coffee or a bottle of water and a picnic.

Large shelters, tables and barbecues are available according to the principle "first come, first served." In the picnic area there is a horseshoe pit and playground equipment that offer a variety of activities for children and adults, and there are plenty of picnic tables, picnic chairs and picnic benches for purchase.

Channahon State Park is an ideal base for a day of hiking and access to unparalleled scenic and historical attractions.

Wildlife and wild flowers abound on the spring paths and large blue herons can be seen feeding and nesting along the park's canal banks. When the parking lot is full, continue to the Jessup St. parking lot, exit Canal St. at the canal and drive down the canal, then continue along the canal to Jess up St., then exit the canal on Jessups St. and continue to Channahon.
