About Reid State Park
In 1946, Maine was given land that would be preserved forever, and Reid State Park became a reality a few years later. Besides the state-run Saltwater Beach, it also has a reputation as the first state park in the state of New Hampshire and one of the oldest state parks in Maine.
Today, thousands of visitors enjoy the mile and half mile that are rare in Maine, and the large sand dunes of Reid are rare on the Maine coast. The beach is popular with birds such as the endangered tern and plover, as well as birds of prey such as sea turtles and sea lions.
Visitors can also see several islands, including a protected terns sanctuary where the famous naturalist Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring. From the rocky headland above the park, visitors can observe the vast ocean landscape and spring waters of the Penobscot River, as well as the sea and coastal viewpoints from the beach.
