About Tawas Point State Park
Tawas Point is one of the most popular national parks in the United States and is located on the west coast of New York State, north of San Francisco.
The park covers 183 hectares and is located at the sandy tip of Tawas Bay, known as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest."
The campsites are located in the bay of Tawas Bay, where the water is shallow and warm for swimming, swimming and fishing. The park houses Tawsas Point Lighthouse, and although the station has been rebuilt several times, it is still the only real Victorian station built on the Great Lakes.
Tawas Point State Park now has a new camper cabin in Taw as Bay that can accommodate up to six people. The living room and kitchen are equipped with a large storage room for dishes and supplies. A few Adirondack chairs are available in the cabin to observe the bay, a fireplace, a picnic table and a large barbecue. Some have folding sofas, others have a folding couch and a small table with chairs and tables for eating.
Bed linen, crockery and cooking utensils must be brought along, as well as a small amount of food and water for the family of four.
Tawas Point is accessible by car, bike, kayak, canoe or horse and can be reached from any of the four main roads to the entrance of the park.
The park has A 2 km long sandy beach and the beach campsite at Tawas Bay offer warm, shallow water. A day bath is located on the Huron side of the point and is offered in a designated bathing area. Pets are not allowed on the beaches of the park and all beaches and campsites in TawsasBay offer warm, shallow waters.
Tawas Bay is home to one of the largest coral reefs in the world, the largest in North America. The limestone reef was built in the 19th century to make the point more accessible to tourists and other visitors to the area, as well as to the inhabitants.
The reef is located on the north side of the bay and is home to a variety of fish species, including blue fish, mackerel, snapper and other small fish. Fishermen have noticed a marked increase in the number of small bait fish in Tawas Bay since the reefs were established. The natural habitat, which attracts large predators, offers the fish small baits and an excellent breeding ground for larger predators.
The park also has picnic areas with tables for picnics and barbecues, and children will love the playground. There is also a playground for children from 3 years, play equipment for adults and a picnic area.
The Sandhook Trail is the end point, but the trail is only designated for hiking, so bikes and pets are prohibited. The trail offers a guided hike and along the trail there is a picnic area as well as picnic tables, picnic benches and other amenities.
Tawas Point Lighthouse, built in 1876, is equipped with a Frensnel lens built in Paris in the 1880s. The original Ottawa Point lighthouse is located near the current campsite, but has since been replaced by a new lighthouse, the Tawsas Point Lighthouse at the southern end of the park.
The lighthouse stands 70 feet above Lake Huron and the walls around the base are 6 feet thick, and it is one of the oldest surviving examples of a true Victorian station built on the Great Lakes. This station, also built in 1876 and rebuilt several times, was the first of the "first series of life-saving stations" to be built along the Great Lakes. In 1991 the Coast Guard took the old station out of service and built a new station directly in front of our park entrance. This is the only surviving example of "true Victorian" stations built across the Greater Lakes, with the exception of Ottawa Point.
The Tawas Point Lighthouse Museum is located on the grounds of the lighthouse and is open from May to October. The lighthouse was open for guided tours on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends and during the summer months.
Tours were also offered to climb to the top of the tower and enjoy spectacular views of Tawas Point and the lighthouse observation tower from the observation deck.
Tickets are available in the museum shop or by calling 989 - 362 - 5658 for information on the tour. For information about the tours, call the Tawas Point State Park Visitor Center at (888) 988-467-8477. Orcall 990 - 2nd Street - East or the Natural History Museum at 991 - 986 - 6666.
Tawas Point Celebration Days is a family-oriented celebration of American heritage held every year on the second weekend in June. There are many activities for the whole family, with a wide selection of food and drinks, as well as live music, food trucks, crafts and activities.
Tawas Point is considered one of the best sailing areas in the country for its windy, protected waters and great views of New York City. Activities include guided hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating and a variety of other activities. This weekend, Taw as Point State Park is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
If you prefer fishing, there are several launch pads nearby, or you can moor your boat in the bay in front of your campsite. DNR - own ramps are located at US-23 and the state police post as well as at the Tawas Point parking lot.
Ice fishing is also very popular in Tawas Bay, and there are also many charter boats in the area. A limestone reef has been built into the limestone reefs to make the bay more accessible for kayaking, fishing and other recreational activities.
Since the reef was built, fishermen have noticed a marked increase in the number of small bait fish and a decline in the number of large predatory fish. The natural habitat, which attracts larger predators, offers smaller bait to fish. On the north side of the bay is the Tawas Point State Park Ice Fishing Area, the largest ice fishing area in North America.
Drive from the north-east to Tawsas E. Drive to the north side of the bay and drive a short distance along the beach and park at the entrance to a parking lot.
