About Chippewa National Forest
Chippewa National Forest is located in northern Minnesota and covers a total area of 2.2 million square kilometers.
The hilly plateaus of the forest cover a total area of 1.6 million square kilometres. The forest boundary includes 665,000 acres managed by the USDA Forest Service, of which 635,500 acres in the Chippewa National Forest are controlled by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The forest landscape is a remnant of the glaciers that covered northern Minnesota about 10,000 years ago. State Highway 2 runs from Grand Rapids through the middle of these forests and there are a number of hiking trails, such as the Chippewa Trail and the Grand River Trail, as well as a trail head to the US border.
