About Temperance River State Park

Take a path that winds along the edge of Temperance River Gorge and enjoy a rushing waterfall surrounded by pine, cedar and birch forests. The fast-flowing river leaves deep potholes in the riverbed and is a great place to take a walk along the paths that wind around the edges of the gorge, overlooking Mt. Rainier, the Great Smoky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

Winter brings cross-country skiers and snowmobilers to the hilly terrain, and trails in the Superior National Forest connect visitors to the camp with trails to Mt. Rainier and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Carlton Peak, a new extension to the park, is popular with climbers and offers visitors even more leisure opportunities. The vegetation in this park is a mixture of grasses, shrubs and trees, as well as a variety of other plants and animals.

The topography of the park is reflected in the diversity of vegetation, ranging from wet lowlands to dry high altitudes. The most common forest trees are pine, oak, birch, elm, pine, oak, ferns and pine, but there are many other tree species and shrubs as well as grasses, shrubs and other plants.

The fast-falling river cuts through the soft lava bed, and swirling water carries sand and gravel that remove the softer lava and create potholes. These potholes are dug deeper and deeper, eventually connecting and creating deep, narrow gorges. When the river finds its new channels, more of the holes will remain, leaving a deep and narrow gorge and a new riverbed for the next few kilometers.

The diversity of plants and communities in the park provides habitat for many different animal species, and wildlife watching is not uncommon in and around the park.

Brown, brown and rainbow trout have been farmed in the Temperance River for years, but brown and brown trout are now the natural population. The rivers Moderation and Cross are designated trout rivers by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the California Department of Natural Resources (CDNR).

Chinook salmon and steelhead are also imported into the Temperance River by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The first white visitors to the North Coast were the Ojibwe Indians of the Great Lakes region of North America, who traveled along the shores of Lake Superior in the 1660s. The French controlled the area on the south coast of Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and the upper peninsula of Wisconsin together with the Eau Claire Indians until 1763. The first white settlers in this area were probably begged by the American Fur Company, which was located off the coast in the 1830s, but not until the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

It is said that the park got its name from the bar, which has other rivers at the mouth of the north coast. The river's water flows through debris that has accumulated during the construction of a dam at Lake Superior and the removal of debris from a bridge over the creek.

You could call it a river bar, but there is no "moderation," which means there are no bars, so it is a river with a bar and a stream without a bar.

The area was declared a national park in 1957 and a steady stream of visitors flocks to the north coast of the park. The entrance to this park is located at the mouth of the Tempe River, north of San Francisco Bay, on the east side of Highway 101.
