About Missouri River Headwaters State Park

The headwaters of the Missouri River have been a geographical focus in the western United States and Canada since the beginning of the 19th century. The Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin rivers flowed into the 2,300-mile Missouri River. Flathead, Bannock, and Shoshoni Indians, who claimed the region for its rich resources, vied for control of the area, as did the trappers and settlers who followed them.

Meriwether Lewis wrote that the land suddenly opened up to "a vast and beautiful plain and meadow, which seemed to be surrounded on all sides by distant and lofty mountains.

Later, a member of the expedition, John Colter, made several trips to the area in search of furs and began a famous escape nearby. The legendary Sacajawea was captured here as a child and eventually returned with members of a Corps of Discoveries.

The pioneers slowly settled the surrounding area and turned it into profitable pastures and farmland. Missouri Headwaters State Park preserves the history of this region, which has been attracting people for thousands of years. The park offers a variety of hiking trails, picnic areas and scenic views of the Missouri River.

River swimming and fishing are popular activities, and the park is home to a variety of water sports including canoeing, kayaking, rafting and kayaking.

On the 90, take the Three Forks exit, then drive two miles east on Secondary Road 205 and drive to the campsite. Campers can enjoy the convenience of one of the many campgrounds in the park, such as the campground at St. Louis River Headwaters State Park. This site features vaulted toilets, picnic tables, a picnic area and pool, as well as an outdoor picnic table.
