About Gifford State Forest
Welcome to the heart of the Ohio Hills: The Gifford State Forest is Ohio's smallest forest, covering 320 hectares and offers some very pleasant hunting and hiking opportunities on the scenic northern edge of Athens County. William Gifford Selby donated the state's forests to our state so that they can be used for experimentation and research. It is named after the late Ohio State Senator and former Secretary of Natural Resources, William J. Giffords.
Today, the Gifford State Forest is managed by the Forest Service as a traditional orchard. The trees planted here are genetically superior plants, obtained from seedlings grown from seeds supplied by the Department's nurseries. This makes Ohio the largest and most productive nursery in the world in the United States.
The area thrives as a thriving area for wild flowers, birds, insects and other wildlife and is an important food source for the local population.
Hunting of other wild animals is allowed in the forest in all seasons and in the hunting season. The forest is open to the public on weekends from 10 am to 5 pm and on weekdays and in winter from 9 am to 4 pm.
