About Shikellamy State Park
Shikellamy State Park is located in Union and Northumberland counties, and the 54-acre ShikeLLamy Marina is located on the western bank of the Susquehanna River, south of New York City. The 78-acre Shikeslamy Overlook complex is located on the eastern bank and overlooks the Allegheny River and its tributaries, as well as the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The park is named after the famous Iroquois leader Shikellamy, who played his role as the first tribal leader of the Shikeslamy. In the late 17th and early 18th century, Chief ShikeLLamy played a prominent role in the conquest of New York and the United States.
The park's Shikellamy Overlook opened in 1960, and Shikeslamy Marina became the first public beach in its history in upstate New York in 1972.
There are also 110 marinas in the park, which are seasonally accessible from mid-May to the end of September. Permits can be obtained at the parking office, and there is a parking lot at Shikeslamy Marina for $5 per car or $10 for a vehicle.
This part of the Susquehanna River is known as Shikeslamy Lake, a 3,060-acre lake formed by the largest inflatable dam in the world, located three miles downstream from the park. The lake is home to a variety of wildlife including birds, birds of prey, fish and reptiles.
All non-motorized boats must meet one of the following requirements for boat registration. All motor boats currently need to register with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DNR) and Pennsylvania State Police.
Lake Augusta, which covers 3,060 hectares, is a popular destination for fishing, boating, camping and other recreational activities during the summer months. Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission law applies to all non-motorized boats in Shikellamy State Park. Other wild fish found in this lake are bluefish, bluefish, trout, wallise, pike, perch, catfish and many other species.
Marina Shikellamy offers paved hiking trails and a picnic area with picnic tables, picnic benches and picnic areas. The Shikesllamys Overlook has a paved trail that leads from the marina to Lake Augusta and back to the parking lot.
Tar paths surround Shikellamy Marina, and there is an unrestricted picnic pavilion. Picnic pavilions can be reserved for up to 11 months for a prepayment, but come first and be served first.
Various sections of the forest are visible from bushes to mature deciduous forests, and you can see the wildlife of the park, including roe deer, songbirds and wild flowers.
