About Black Moshannon State Park
Black Moshannon State Park covers 3,394 hectares of forest and wetlands and provides recreational opportunities for thousands of visitors. At the top of Allegheny Plateau, you'll find a wide range of scenic views of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh River. Stay longer so you can explore the beautiful forest trails and hike in the picturesque areas of the park.
The park preserves a unique natural environment and is located on the eastern edge of Allegheny Plateau in the western part of Pittsburgh County, Pennsylvania. The park is surrounded by a network of hiking trails that help to create a remote and wild environment.
The 250 hectare Black Moshannon Lake is fed by a clear spring and a small stream that runs through a swamp that stretches in most directions along its banks. The clear water becomes colourful when it flows and the peat vegetation acts like a giant tea bag that colours the water.
Appropriately, the black in the name of the park describes the tea - coloured water, and in a way reminds of the colour of black tea.
The park rents out 13 rustic cottages, and six modern cottages are available all year round - but they need to be maintained. Each cabin is minimalist and has a wood-burning stove, stove with hob and a small kitchen and dining area.
The cabins can be rented year-round for $1,000 per month or $2,500 per year, and tenants of both rustic and modern cabins must bring their own food, water, clothing and other essentials.
Most of the campsites have electricity and 80% of the campsites have picnic tables and a fireplace. Most have room for tents and trailers, but there are a number of washhouses and washhouses in the area as well as a variety of other amenities.
The season starts on the second Friday in April and ends after the end of the season in December. Unless otherwise stated, the sandy beach is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, and lifeguards are in action. If a lifeguard is not in use, please read the swimming rules before or after swimming.
Ninety berths and three boat moorings are available, and during the summer season boats can be rented. All motor boats must have a boat registration in the respective state and all non-motorized boats must have one of the following boat registrations in each state.
Eight picnic pavilions can be reserved for a fee, and 250 picnic tables are available in four picnic areas. They cannot be reserved and are served only in the summer months (June to October) and in winter (December to April).
Moor walks and creek surveys provide information about moors, hikes and streams as well as water quality and water management.
