About Poe Paddy State Park
Poe Paddy State Park is located on the eastern edge of the state-approved Green Drake Mountain.
Hikers can walk from the park's main entrance to the lake, along a path by the stream and from there to Poe's Pond.
Poe Mills had three hundred inhabitants in 1890, and Poe Valley State Park was nearby. Poe Paddy is located in the short, bumpy town of Poe Mills, a small town on the eastern edge of Green Drake Mountain.
The main railway, built in 1879, runs through Poe Mills, and a spur railway runs into the area around Poe Paddy. Many smaller makeshift wooden railways have been built throughout the mountain valley, but the main line runs along the eastern edge of Poe Valley.
In the mid-1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built a camp in the valley and Poe Creek was dammed to supply water to steam sawmills. Trains travel in a loop through the park, with a stop at Poe Paddy State Park on the east side of Poe Mills.
The campsites have rustic toilets and drinking water, and campers can use a variety of amenities such as picnic tables, fireplace, showers and bathrooms. Access is not guaranteed in the winter months, but on weekends from 9 am to 5 pm and weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm, from 5 pm to 9 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Qualified groups of adults and young people can rent one of the two campsites, which are open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays and from 8 pm to 8 am on weekends. Penns Creek flows from Poe Paddy campsite and is a fantastic fly hatch. The nationally known "Green Dragon Hatch" is usually found in late May or early June, and trout fish the trout in the stream as it flows.
This area can accommodate up to 50 people and has picnic tables, water and rustic toilets. There is a playground near the picnic area and various outdoor activities are available throughout the year, including picnics, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and fishing.
The marked gravel road in this area is open during the game season and for licensed snowmobiles.
Poe Paddy leads to Penns Creek Tunnel, the largest tunnel in State Park and one of the oldest in Pennsylvania. Walk up the path that follows Penn's Creek, cross the footbridge and then walk through the tunnel.
Please note that motor vehicles also use this road, but quads are not permitted on state roads or in state forests.
