About Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park
Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is located in the Greenbrier River Valley, north of Lewisburg, and is the site of one of the most famous battles in Virginia history, the Battle of Droop Mountains. The battle that interrupted the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad in Salem, Virginia, pitted the US Army Corps of Engineers (USAAF) against the Confederate Army of Virginia.
In the morning Echols "small Confederate army prevailed, blocking the highway with artillery, but was overwhelmed by the crushing advance of the USAAF on its left flank in the afternoon. General E Chols retired to his base Droop Mountain north of Lewisburg, Virginia.
On November 7, federal troops occupied Lewisburg, and General Averell returned to his base on Droop Mountain, a few miles south of the battlefield. Loaded with prisoners and captured cattle, he decided to wait until early December to launch his first major offensive against the USAAF in West Virginia. The Shenandoah Valley operation in the spring of 1864 pulled the remaining Confederate troops out of West Virginia, leaving the new state safely under the control of a federal government for the rest of the war.
There is a cul-de-sac down the mountain slope, which offers spectacular views of Droop Mountain and the valley below, as well as picturesque views.
This is one of the most popular trails in the park, which winds through the heath where you can admire interesting plants, tall pines and animals. Hikers can walk the moor nature trail (there is no path) or park and walk to the park office.
The trail starts at the pump house and cannon and climbs a series of small cliffs and ends at a southern picnic spot. This trail leads to Horse Heaven Rock, where horses that were killed during the Battle of Droop Mountain were disposed of.
This is one of the toughest parking lanes in the gorge, where Union soldiers climbed the mountain to attack Confederates waiting above. This trail starts at the first sharp bend in a road near the office and ends at a tower and climbs to the top of Droop Mountain.
American chestnut tribes that were still alive after the battle survived, as did many Native Americans. This trail starts at the park office and climbs steeply up a slope and ends at a lookout tower.

The 2.3 km long trail is flat and easy to walk, but it is winter and the trail runs through a series of rock faces. The trail starts at the pump house and cannon and ends near the park office, and runs for about 1.5 miles before running out of water.
From the cliffs, visitors can admire spectacular views of the mountains and cliffs to the east and west, as well as the waterfalls and mountain range to the south.
The path starts at the park office and ends at a stone shed near the observation tower, and on the ground floor there is a small parking lot with picnic table and picnic area.
