About Bear River State Park
Just outside Evanston, Wyoming, is Bear River State Park, home to the largest herd of bison in the United States and one of the largest herds of elk in the world. Small bison and elk heads live along the river and its tributaries, but the public viewing takes place at an altitude of at least 1,000 meters above sea level. Bear River is a year-round park covering nearly 300 hectares, accessible only by remote control car from the nearest town or city center.
On the west side of the river there is a fully used gravel road, and three kilometers of footpaths are within the park boundaries. The arched footbridge over the Bear River offers views of a large herd of bison and elk, as well as a number of other wildlife.
The trails within the park are also bounded by the Bear River Trail, a two-kilometer path through the forest and a three-kilometer trail on the east side of the river.
Many other hiking trails are maintained for skiers, snowshoes and hikers, but the park is only for the day - for use only. Overnight stays are permitted in the parking lot of Bear River State Park, along the hiking trails and on the campground.
