So get your winter tents ready because winter is coming!
Size
The sizes of winter tents can vary from smaller, compact tents to larger tents that are a necessity if you plan on taking more people on the trip. Furthermore, the material the winter tents are made of, can make them look more bulkier.
It is very practical if the tent has a high ceiling and a spacious interior. You don’t want to cramp up more people in the tent than it can actually accommodate. Storage space is directly related to the size of the tent. In other words, a family camping tent will be more spacious than a 2 person tent, which is only suitable for one or two people.
Insulation
Insulation keeps the cold air outside and lets the warm air stay longer inside the tent.
In some cases, an insulated winter tent means that you won’t even need to bring a heater. Some of the warmest tents for camping include the tents that are made of high-quality fabrics that provide great protection from cold weather and keep you warm in the nights.
It is easier to insulate smaller tents, but that shouldn’t discourage you from getting a proper family tent. Insulating a winter tent means that you need to trap the body heat inside.
For instance, a cheap solution is to insulate the rooftop is by using a reflective foil, and when the warm air rises it will reflect back to you.
Number of People
Family Camping Cold Weather Tents
Family tents are a necessity for a larger group of people, so everyone can freely move around and have enough room to sleep.
If you know that more people will be coming with you, make sure you choose a tent with enough storage space and bring additional sleeping pads or sleeping bags. Family tents are usually larger tents with several entrances and more storage space.
2 Person Winter Tent
If you go camping or hiking with only one person, then 2 person winter tents are more than enough for your comfort and privacy.
You can still choose a family tent, if you want the utmost comfort, but it is not necessary to go for bigger and heavier tents if there is no actual need to.
If there are only two of you, you will have more room to put a heater or opt for thicker and bigger sleeping pads. When you’re traveling alone, or with 1 person, you will have more space and privacy, but on the other hand, it will be a bit trickier to keep the tent warm.
Winter Tent Materials
Some of the materials and fabrics used for winter tents are usually cotton or polyester and mesh for windows or panels.
When we compare the two, polyester dries off more easily and requires less maintenance, whereas cotton is a better insulator and a breathable material that absorbs water.
The fact that it absorbs water, means that is can be very heavy when wet. A below-zero tent you decide to purchase will ultimately depend on your personal preferences and what activity are you planning to take part in.
Single Wall vs Double Wall
Another division is made based on the number of walls the tent consists of. Single wall tents consist of one wall of fabric and are lighter to transport.
Usually, these tents are made of breathable fabric and are more compressible. Single wall tents are for mountains since they can be erected in a couple of minutes and their design is lightweight.
Double-wall tents have 2 layers, usually the tent body and a rainfly which also makes them heavier and bulkier. The inner part is water-resistant and the outer part, or the rainfly, is most likely, made of polyester. Double wall tents are better for wet and damp weather, when you’re carrying a lot of gear.

Pros
- Comfortable
- Elevated
- Thick fabric
- Durable
- Can fit up to 8 people
Cons
- Very huge, can be hard to transport
Our Take
This is a very roomy tent. The interior dimensions are the full 85 inches lengthwise. Width-wise, there are support bars that take up an inch on each side, but with a proper camp mat or inflatable bed, this shouldn't be a problem as the mat will cover these. The tent its self offers four windows with great ventilation. Plus all four windows function as doors too, or can be screen windows, or fully zipped up. Plus, there's a rain cover provided, although you can get away without it in almost all rainy situations. There is a foam padding built into the bottom, but mostly for insulation, not a mattress.
This tent seems to blow away the competition. This thing is huge, but its dimensions are clearly listed, and they are accurate. It might not fit in your trunk but it would fit in a large roof rack cargo box, or in some cases, you strap onto my hitch carrier. All in all, in terms of design, function, and durability, this tent deserves to be in this list.
