Hurricane Ridge Trail was established after Hurricane Frederic hit the Gulf Coast in 1979. The hurricane has created a natural ridge by depositing sand, branches and vegetation under the force of the tidal waves. Many tornadoes uprooted hundreds of trees, and many of the dead trees are still visible today.

The grey, rotting trunks are a powerful reminder of the power of storms of this kind, as well as the effects of wind and rain.

Take your time along the way to admire some of the interesting plants that grow in the area. Look for birds such as woodpeckers and mockingbirds feasting on insects from the trees and try to find animal tracks in the sand.

Hurricane Ridge Trail starts at RV Check-in Station and follows the ridge for about a mile and ends at Middle Lake Trail. Enjoy discovering the parts of nature that are common to the Gulf State Park along the way. Start at the Nature Centre and follow the path to the Mittler See until it crosses the middle lake section. The MiddleLake Trailbe on the east side of the park, which leads from the nature center along the Gulf of Mexico Trail to the northern end of Gulf Lake.

Walking along the canal, you should look out for alligators that float on the surface, and experience the thrill of seeing them in the warm summer months when they hide in the grass at the edge of the canals. Look for their eyes and noses under the water surface and look out for them while they swim and swim.

Bear Creek Trail is a unique trail because it was once an old asphalt road leading to Orange Beach. Although asphalted, it is one of the most scenic trails in the entire state of Florida and a great place for hiking and biking.

Along the way there are also several signs that will help you identify many local trees and shrubs. When you pass by, look for trees that have a rough grey bark on their trunks and notice the glossy dark green leaves.

Many trees, shrubs and paths are covered by a thick, woody grape variety, the Muscadine. This wild variety is abundant in the Gulf State Park and small leaves remain on the tree, which gave it the name Living Oak.

The fruit ripens in late summer and is slightly larger than native grapes, but it is still delicious. Animals that enjoy wild grapes are birds, squirrels, raccoons, coyotes, foxes, birds of prey, rabbits and other wild animals.

The Bear Creek Trail starts from the main road to the campsite and is a unique path that winds through a small canal and offers the right environment. Watch animals in the logs along the canal shore and watch out for the animals on the trees and trunks along the shore. You can return to your campsite by following the Kreisstraße 2 and at the end of the trail turn right onto Bärenbachweg.

High swamp grass grows in many places along the way and in some places the grass is so thick that when you see the edge it is toothed. If you rub too hard on the grass, it scratches your fingers and legs and after you find it, you discover the sawgrass.
