The park is located at 14,162 feet from the summit of Shasta and is one of the largest national parks in the USA and the second largest in California.

The Shasta National Forest was founded in 1905 with the proclamation of President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1954 the two forests were combined into one administrative unit and in 1954 the forest was again combined into the Trinidad National Park.

The Shasta - Trinity National Forest is located in the Central Valley in Northern California, between San Francisco and Sacramento, California. The forest is divided into seven ranger districts, each with its own ranger district, ranger station and park.

Although the Shasta-Trinity National Forest does not host any of the threatened or endangered plants listed under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA), it does authorize, fund and conduct activities that contribute to the list of native plants established under ESA. This prevention philosophy is the basis for the designation of the forest as the National Wildlife Refuge in the National Park Service (NPS).

The aim is to maintain a well-distributed population in the landscape, but sensitive plants are simply those for which viability is important. For these plants, the geographical distribution is limited to the Shasta - Trinity National Forest. Endemites are considered the most common endemic species in California and one of the largest in the world.
