About Border Field State Park
Border Field State Park is located on the west side of San Diego County, California, about 30 miles south of Los Angeles. Sand dunes and salt marshes provide refuge for endangered birds such as the light-footed Clapper, a rare and endangered bird of prey in the southern hemisphere. Border Field is also north of the California-New Mexico border and east of California's border with Mexico.
The park does not recommend swimming or wading in the raging currents of the San Diego River, but it does offer a wide range of activities including hiking, biking, camping and fishing. Visitors can surf, ride, comb beaches, watch birds, swim, cycle, walk, hike or ride.
In 1850, delegations from both countries began surveying the border here, and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, officially ending the war between the United States and Mexico. The border monument, number 258, can be viewed from the Mesa Monument, and in the 1850s, a delegation from each country began inspecting the borders at these points.
It is also managed by the California State Parks and is one of only 23 wetlands in the United States designated as wetlands of international importance by the International Ramsar Committee. The reserve is funded by a grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the scientific community recognizes it as a "very important place.

In the southwest of America there are monuments marking the border between Mexico and California. When California became a territory at the end of the Mexican-American War, the international border became a necessity.
The Italian marble monument was erected in 1851 to mark the original surveying site, and today the monument stands in the shadow of a bullfight in Tijuana and is still marked. American and Mexican surveying teams surveyed the border, and the Navy used Border Field as an airfield during World War II. Fighter pilots received shooting training and learned to race targets over dunes and tracks known as rabbit tracks.
The Navy retained control of Border Field until the country was handed over to the state in the early 1970s, and the Navy still controls it today, though the land has been handed over to our state ever since. Visit the Visitor Centre and admire the natural history exhibits that interpret this unique environment. Walk to a cliff or beach and enjoy views of the San Diego River, the Pacific Ocean or the Mexico border. Within the boundaries of the boundary area of Field State Park stretches a 1.5 mile long strip of sand dunes with a total area of 2,000 hectares.
