On July 1, 2005, the USDA Forest Service celebrated its 100th anniversary, and on that day 100 years ago, the mission was established to preserve healthy, diverse, and productive forests and grasslands for current and future generations. On the occasion of the centenary of the establishment of this agency, we ask our public partners to join us in celebrating the 100th anniversary of our nation's first National Forest Service. The establishment of the Forest Service led to a new conservation ethic implemented by professional workers.
The first forest was managed by the General Bureau of the Ministry of the Interior and closed in 1891, and again administered as a national forest from 1894 to 1892.
Conservationists of the day, including John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club, argued vigorously whether the reserve should be run as a national forest or as a reserve under the control of a private company like the National Park Service. In early 1905, a group of conservationists, biologists, ecologists and other experts from the USA and Canada began collecting information about the conservation potential of Stanislaus National Forest and other national forests.
On July 1, 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt changed the Bureau of Forestry to the USDA Forest Service and appointed Gifford Pinchot as the first chief forest ranger. With the establishment of the Forestry Office, a new conservation ethic was introduced, which differs from that of other land management authorities. Pinchesot was firmly convinced that "Forest Nations" should be the primary source of wood and other resources the growing nation needed.
Stanislaus National Forest was declared a national forest because it sent a signal for the wise use of public space.
The mission and care of this land as a service to people is focused on multiple uses and strives to preserve healthy, diverse and productive forests and grasslands for present and future generations. Many of the trails in Stanislaus National Forest are open to mountain bikers, but the law says the wilderness is closed to mechanical travel.
To continue to ensure access to a wide range of driving options, cyclists must be considerate of other road and path users, avoid driving when and where resource damage occurs, and avoid causing vegetation and soil damage. Hiking is therefore not allowed and can cause damage to vegetation, soil and / or water resources.
Hikers, horseback riders and backpackers have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of trails in the Stanislaus National Forest and Carson Iceberg Wilderness. The paths of the forest offer travelers a chance to experience the abundance of natural beauty of Stanisaus. Many of these can be found on the topographic map "Carson Iceburg Wilderness," which is available from the Forestry Department.
Whether your hike takes an hour or a full day, you can wear comfortable hiking boots adapted to the season and take water and a good map of the area with you. Be prepared for different conditions, from good to unkempt, and let us know where you are going.
If you wish to bring pets, they should be kept under lead control to minimize the impact on the natural environment and the environment around them. Do not practise hiking or camping techniques during this time and do not observe any impact on the natural environment.
Smoking is permitted in winter and early spring (November to April), when the vegetation is green, and in the summer months (July to August). The most pleasant way to see the Stanislaus National Forest is on horseback. Around 400 km of hiking trails are suitable for horse riding, and several areas with base camps are available. Further information on the management of wilderness stocks is available at the forest office on each hiking trail.
