About Naugatuck State Forest
The Naugatuck State Forest covers nearly 5,000 acres and includes parts of Great Falls State Park and Nipmuc National Wildlife Refuge. It is divided into five blocks, called North, South, Central, East, West and West Blocks, each divided by the State of Connecticut, covering a total area of 1.5 million hectares.
In 1921, Mr. Whittemore began buying up land in the Naugatuck Valley and donating it to the state. The forest was created as part of Great Falls State Park and Nipmuc National Wildlife Refuge.
After his death in 1928, his family continued to acquire land and by 1931, almost 2,000 hectares were given to him. He lived to achieve his dream, and the forest is still used as part of Naugatuck State Park and Nipmuc National Wildlife Refuge.
