About Algonquin State Forest
The Algonquin State Forest began in 1937 with 92 hectares and has grown to 2,545 hectares since then. The forest consists of several plots near the towns of Colebrook and Winchester and is one of the largest forests in the province.
Native American name, the name "Algonquin" is a reference to the Algonquins, a group of indigenous peoples from western Canada. Most of the forest is bordered by Sandy Brook and Colebrook and serves as a recreational area for hunters, hikers, birdwatchers and other outdoor enthusiasts. The forest, along with several other state forests in the province, such as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is a gift to our state.
