About American Legion State Forest

The state forest was created to protect the natural beauty of the Great Lakes region of North America's Great Plains and Pacific Northwest.

The forest is characterized by its abundance of scenic lakes and streams; there are over 900 lakes, numerous streams and rivers within the timber line. Over two million visitors come to the state forest every year to enjoy a wide range of leisure activities.

The numerous paths through the forest offer opportunities to listen to a variety of birds, observe wildlife and observe the diverse plant species that can be found here. Animals and birds that occur in northern Wisconsin, such as deer, elk, elk, wolf, coyote, fox, raccoon, owl and many other animal species, can be found in this forest. Water resources offer athletes and recreational athletes a variety of activities in the beautiful state forests. Walking through the woods means seeing and appreciating the beauty of the forest swamps, lakes and streams, as well as hiking, cycling, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

The most common animal species include deer, elk, wolves, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, owls and many other animal species.

There are about a hundred species of birds that can be seen and heard in the forest, as well as many other animal species. Be sure to keep your eyes open to see a floating bald eagle and your ears to hear a sea urchin or two.
