About Massacoe State Forest

The state forest in Massacoe was originally called Simsbury Forest and was first used in the early 20th century, beginning with the first purchase of 119 hectares in 1908. The forest grew from 244 acres to 99 acres when much of it went to Stratton Brook State Park, which consisted of the Parks Division.

The proximity of Stratton Brook to the Hartford area made the smaller park more popular, and in 1996 the park became the first state park in Connecticut to be fully wheelchair accessible. Originally known as the Massacoe State Forest, it was acquired to demonstrate control of wildfires along the railroad line. The railway tracks have been replaced by an impressive cycle path shaded by white pine trees leading to a picturesque stream.

Take I-91 to the exit and at the end of the ramp turn left onto Route 178 West, then turn left into the park. Turn left into the Massacoe State Park parking lot and then right onto the service road.

Turn right onto Routes 10 and 202 North and follow Route 309 for 1 mile to Stratton Brook on the left. Turn right and drive through the park to the end of the service road and turn left into the Massacoe State Park parking lot.

Take I-91 to the exit and follow Route 20 westward through downtown Granby and then south on Route 309 for one mile to Stratton Brook on the left.

Turn right onto Route 309 and follow it westward through downtown Granby for one mile to Stratton Brook on the left. Turn left on Route 20 and then right on the freeway for 1.5 miles to the footpath on top of the hill and turn right.

Turn left onto Route 309 and follow it westward through downtown Granby for one mile to Stratton Brook on the left. Turn left on Route 44 and drive 4.6 kilometers to the intersection with Route 309.

Turn left and continue for another 4 - 6 kilometers to the intersections with Routes 10 and 202. Then turn right onto the footpath on the hill and then right into the woods. Take Route 44 and drive west on it for 2.5 miles to St. John's Park and the footpath.
