About Torreya State Park

The high cliffs above the Apalachicola River make Torreya State Park one of the most popular spots in the state of Florida. It was developed by the Civil Defence in the 1930s and is popular for camping, hiking and picnicking. The park is named after the Tor Reya tree, which grows only on the steep slopes above the Apalachicsula River.

The hardwood forest offers some of the best fall colors found in Florida, and birds are also a popular activity. Over 100 species of birds have been spotted in the park, as well as a variety of reptiles, amphibians, birds and other wildlife.

Ranger - Guided tours of the fully furnished plantation house built in 1849. There are fully equipped campsites on the campsites, and there is also a primitive campsite and a youth camp.

The river was first crossed during the Seminole Indian War of 1818, and when Florida became US territory in 1828, it hit the first government highway in North Florida. Archaeologists have discovered a number of Indian sites here, but these animals are not the only inhabitants known to have lived in the area over the centuries.

In the 19th century, the Apalachicola River was an important highway in the state, used by more than 200 steamships en route to New York City and other major cities.

During the Civil War, this important route was protected by a battery of six cannons standing on rocks, and along the steep path the remains of a cannon pit can be seen. The battery was there to prevent EU gunboats from passing through, but it is still there today. In the park at Ocheesee Landing is Gregory House, built in 1849 by planter Jason Gregory.

The Gregory plantation flourished at the beginning of the Civil War and after the abolition of slavery.

In 1935 the house was demolished and moved by a civil protection corps to its present location in the park. The 12,000 hectare park has 30 campsites with electricity and water connections, which are available for reservation. Large JURT tents can be reserved all year round, and the park has a large number of small campsites as well as a few small ones.

The Torreya Yurt is a large, curved tent with two beds, a kitchen and two bathrooms. The yurts have futons with bunk beds and beds for up to four people, as well as a shower and toilet.

It features a modern playground and a horseshoe area, located next to the main parking lot of the park, with picnic table, picnic tables and picnic chairs.

The natural beauty of the park is best enjoyed on one of these nature trails, and the Weeping Ridge Trail offers great views of Torreya State Park and its surroundings. This 7 km long circular trail leads hikers through almost all the natural features of this park. The trail offers excellent views over the river, the lake and a variety of animal species, as well as a number of picnic spots.

Violations of these rules may result in campers being asked to put animals in the park or leave the campsite. Animals may not be kept on or near the park and animals may not cause material damage.
