About Hontoon Island State Park

We welcome visitors who want to enjoy nature and history in tranquil solitude, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Great Lakes and the Pacific Ocean.

On a walk through the park you can observe the thousand-year-old colonization of the Indians. Stop and take a walk to learn more about the history of Hoonon Island State Park and its settlement history.

Boating, canoeing and fishing are popular activities and canoe rental is available, as well as a picnic area with tables, barbecues and playgrounds.

For overnight stays, the park has two enclosed bedrooms, two sleeping cabins and three sleeping cabins, as well as a small campsite. Boat rentals and temporary campsites are also available, and a parking ferry operates daily from the island's ferry terminal, located at the northern end of the parking lot on the west side of Hoonon Island.

The first inhabitants of the island were the Timukuan Indians, and snails collected from the shallow St. Johns River were a staple food for humans. Discarded shells have accumulated to form a large hill, one of which can be seen on an educational trail in the park. Three remarkable artifacts have been found on Hontoon Island: a stone statue of a turtle, a shell of a sea turtle and a shell of a snail.

A replica of two totems is on the picnic area, a tribute to the art and craft of an extinct culture. Two small wooden carvings, one of which carved an otter, the other a pelican and a large owl of death into a tree trunk.
