About Alafia River State Park
The reclaimed land, which once housed a phosphate mine, has a unique topography that offers some of Florida's most radical elevation changes. The park offers a variety of waterfalls, streams, lakes and other natural features, as well as a number of hiking trails.
Birdwatchers and nature lovers will enjoy the abundance of wildlife along the trails, and riders and hikers can explore trails that lead to rolling hills, waterfalls, streams, lakes and other natural beauties.
For an overnight stay in the park, there is a fully equipped campsite with the possibility of tents for up to six people, with a maximum of four tents and two tents per person. Additional camping facilities such as campsites, cabins and RV parks are available.
Wildlife observation is possible, so bring binoculars and a camera with a wide-angle lens or high-resolution camera. The park covers 6,344 hectares and is located in the southern part of the state of New Mexico, about 30 km north of Albuquerque. In 1996, Cytec Industries donated the first two acres of its land in Alameda River State Park to the state.
Before the state acquired the property, it was home to a phosphate mine called Lonesome Mine, named after the nearby community of Fort Lonsome (named after the US Army border post that occupied the site during the Third Seminole War) and its surrounding communities. Alafia River State Park is currently offering tents and tents in a new 30-place campsite. It offers a variety of opportunities for camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting and fishing.
Pet camping is possible in Alafia River State Park and in 3 ADA - accessible campsites are available: Official, Universal and Universal. All toilets at the campsite are accessible for disabled people and facilities include a water fountain, picnic tables, picnic table, water cooler, fireplace and picnic area.
Pets must be kept at all times and rest periods must be observed between 23: 00 and 20: 30. Animals that are tied up and left unattended for no more than 30 minutes may not be left unattended for more than 2 hours at a time.
Florida law requires that all pets be vaccinated against rabies, and their owners must collect their pets from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
Animals that are noisy, dangerous, intimidating or destructive must not stay in the park and must be locked up, such as dogs, cats and other animals.
Animals may not be kept on the grounds of the park and any breach of this rule may result in campers being asked to place animals in the parks or leave the campsite. Camping in a primitive group is possible for adults and children under 18 years of age as well as for adults with children under 18 years of age.
A new campsite with 30 pitches is available, and facilities include a campsite, picnic area, picnic tables, showers, toilets and showers. For more information, call (888) 543-5555 or the Alameda River State Park toll-free hotline at 1-866-467-7500.
Canoeing and kayaking is a popular activity on the reclaimed lakes of the Alafia River, but currently it does not offer canoe rentals. For fishing, Alafia River State Park offers numerous lakes and a variety of fishing equipment such as kayaks, canoes, rods and nets.
Fish that can be caught include perch, bluefish and catfish, but for large mules, capture and release is recommended.
A fishing license is required and must be surrendered or posted online to the Alameda River State Park's Fish and Game Department. A fishing license can also be purchased online on the National Park website or by calling 1-888-543-4357.
For added enjoyment, there is a children's playground, located near the picnic area. The playground is equipped with two swings and numerous slides, and you can enjoy a peaceful picnic with beautiful views.
There is also a playground, volleyball court and horseshoe pit, and all toilets in the picnic area are ADA - accessible.
Hiking is allowed, and riders can spend a relaxing day on the trails of Alameda River State Park with picnic tables, picnic tables and picnic chairs, or on bicycles.
The green path runs from east to west, the yellow path is an island loop, white paths lead from north to south, blue paths are bee loops, and the green and yellow paths lead to wooded areas in the park.
The path is well marked, but the white path is not, due to its proximity to the beach and other paths.
Without the help of dedicated volunteers, it would not be possible to drive along the paths, which would cause considerable inconvenience. For more information about the Triple B Riding Club, please visit the club's website.
All riders must bring their own horse and proof of current negative gear load is required (no insurance, insurance policy or other insurance).
Alafias roads and bike paths are among the most difficult in the area, as the unique topography offers some of the most radical elevation changes in Florida. There are three large loops, the BLUE LOOP requires the skills of advanced riders for shorter sections and the BLACK LOOB is suitable for advanced riders, but very technical with steep drops and strenuous climbs.
There are two sub-sections of BLACK LOOPS, which are characterized by different numbers of black diamonds. If you see two diamonds, they are expert routes, if not advanced routes, and on these roads a helmet is compulsory. The paths are marked with coloured symbols and for each black diamond there is a different number indicating the different levels of difficulty in each section.
The SWAMP Mountain Bike Club offers guided tours once a month and the association also has a voluntary working day on the first Saturday of the month.
