About Long Key State Park

The Spanish called the island Cayo Vivora, or rattlesnake, because its shape resembled the open jaw of a snake. In the early 20th century, Long Key was home to a luxurious fishing village that was destroyed in 1935 during the Labor Day hurricane.

Today visitors can explore the island by canoe through the lagoon chain and walk along two agricultural trails. The Golden Ball Trail takes visitors through five nature reserves to a viewing tower that offers views of the Florida Keys, the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Barrier Reef.

Some of the best bonefishing in the Keys can be found here, and a fully equipped campsite on the 67400 Overseas Highway, located at mile marker 67.5.

The Kalusa Indians lived on the Keys for over 2,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans, and explorers were attracted long before the park was founded. Under Spanish occupation, other travelers from the nearby islands and the Bahamas made their way to the Florida Keys. Florida State Parks are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except weekends and special events.

Henry Flagler, the founder of the railroad, also founded the Long Key Fishing Club, which was a mecca for the world's largest saltwater fishermen. In 1912, the Keys were no longer considered a remote travel area, and the construction of a railroad line from Miami to Key West, Florida, was completed, making it an important depot. This productive era came to a temporary end when a hurricane destroyed the railroad and fishing society in 1935.

Long Key State Park has three fully equipped campgrounds, each with a full-service campground, picnic area and water park. There are four fully equipped campsites in the park, one each in Key West, Key Biscayne and Key Largo, and one in Fort Myers.

Three toilets and a hot shower are centrally located on each campsite, as well as a picnic area, a water park and a water slide. Two more campsites are planned in Key Biscayne and one in Fort Myers, as well as three more in Long Key State Park.

Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and plans have been made with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Pets must be kept on a leash and must behave well in all areas where pets are allowed and always be to themselves. Pets are only allowed in areas of the park where dogs and cats are not already on a leash or lead.

Quiet time must be observed from 23: 00 to 8: 30 and not longer than 30 minutes left unattended by a handcuffed - in pet.

Florida law requires that all pets be vaccinated against rabies and their owners collect their animals from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FNMCC).

Animals that are noisy, dangerous, intimidating or destructive must not stay in the park and must be locked up or locked away.
