About Apple River Canyon State Park

Apple River Canyon State Park is located on the banks of the Apple River, south of Chicago, Illinois.

The area was once a vast seabed stretching from the Alleghenies to the Rockies, and in 1932 the state of Illinois bought the 297-acre park. The picturesque canyon is formed by the waves of the Apple River and the area that once bordered the Great Lakes, Great Plains, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

The Apple River has flowed endlessly through limestone, dolomite and slate for countless centuries, with massive cliffs carving their way up and forming canyons. Huge periods of water erosion have widened and deepened the crevasses, while the river and streams have found their way over the rocks. The Apple River is also home to prairie grasses such as Prairie Grove and Prairie Falls, as well as many other wildflower species.

Up close, the colorful gorges are dotted with mosses, lichens and tough bushes, which tend to have their own personality and behavior.

The ice age, which ironed out the hills and filled the valleys in other parts of the state, left a scratch in the area. There are also readily available lead veins that have a lot to do with the early development of this section of Illinois. These circumstances explain the fossil remains found on the surface, as well as the presence of fossils of animals such as wolves, coyotes and bears.

The park is one of the most popular hiking trails in the state of Illinois and can be seen from the park. It is a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers, snowshoe hikers, kayakers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

The first whites to see the lead mines were French merchants who settled on the east side of the Mississippi in the 1690s. Joutel, who had been to the Missouri Valley in 1687 and later recorded LaSalle's expedition, wrote that travelers from the upper Mississippi were informed of the "Indian lead mine." The Scottish adventurer John Law, the first to take advantage of these advantages, was the Scottish adventurers John and Law.

American settlers arrived in the 19th century, the Sauk and Fox Indians were driven out during the Black Hawk War, and hundreds of miners crowded through the country into the canyon that is now the canyon. Galena, which lived on the profits from lead mining, developed into an emerging boom town. A Western company, founded after the good development of the lead mines in Illinois, collapsed in an explosion that was heard in France and went down in history as the "Mississippi bubble."

Millville, named after its two sawmills, became a station on the Galena-Chicago line and flourished until 1854, when the Illinois Central Railroad, which built its first line to Chicago, ran through four miles north of the city. In 1892, a devastating flood washed out the dam, ripped away many buildings and drove the people of this city out for good. The city of Millville was founded where the park is today, but there is no trace of it left.

The park offers a variety of hiking, cycling and camping opportunities, as well as hiking and cycling trails. Reservations are not accepted and all the restaurants are run according to the motto "first - come, first serve."
