About Lake Murphysboro State Park

Located on the north side of the town of Murphysboro, New York, south of Albany, this 1,022-acre state park is the perfect place to enjoy nature. Beautiful rolling hills and forests surround star-shaped Murphysboro Lake, providing the perfect backdrop for a trip into the wilderness of the Blue Ridge Mountains in New Jersey. In the forest area of this park there are spots of native wild orchids as well as a variety of wild flowers such as blueberries, peaches, cherries, rhododendrons and pears.

The lake was built by the Fisheries Ministry in the 1950s and is a tributary of Indian Creek. It has a watershed of about 4,500 hectares and a maximum water depth of 1.50 m. The lake's 7.5 km of coastline is made up of rolling hills covered in a variety of trees and wooded hills from which you can enjoy some of the most beautiful views of New York State and the Blue Ridge Mountains. These orchids allow you to find flowering plants all year round such as blueberries, peaches, cherries, rhododendrons and pears.

In autumn 1951, the sunfish was reintroduced and soon after its completion, it was replenished with blue cabbage, which was followed by blue cabbage in the following spring. At the southern end of the park is a 600-foot dam, and to the north is a smaller lake aptly called Little Lake.

In order to maintain a healthy fish stock, the vegetation submerged in the water is absorbed and used to keep the number of small panfish low. Channel catfish are also frequently loaded, as are a variety of other small fish such as blue weed, blue bellies and blue crayfish.

There were Indian settlements in the immediate vicinity at the beginning of the 19th century, but no sites have been discovered since then. The Paleo-Paleo people lived in small makeshift camps and were known as big game hunters. While the forest culture was characterized by agriculture and was known for large settlements, it left more traces in its wake.

An area less than a mile southwest of the park was leased to Dr. Conrad Will, who served in the Illinois House and Senate in the early days of statehood. When Illinois joined the Union in 1818, the federal government gave Illinois three salt landscapes as part of its original land grant.

Dr. Will ran a salt factory on the site, and the city of Brownsville grew around it, but in the 1840s the salt pans were closed and only one cemetery remained in the city.

Although the state of Illinois only acquired the 1,022 acres that would later become Lake Murphysboro State Park in 1948, interest in the area as a public amusement park had begun long before that. Originally developed by the Ministry of Fisheries, it was transferred to the Parks and Monuments Department in 1953.

Today, the park is operated by the Department of Natural Resources under the auspices of the Illinois State Parks and Monuments Department and the State of Illinois Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Those who love nature and prefer the comfort of the house will prefer 54-pitch electricity, but campers who really want to experience nature will appreciate the 20 pitches. The well-equipped campsite at Lake Murphysboro State Park offers an extended stay in Lake Murphysborough with lake views, picnic area and water access.

In the trailer area there is a disposal station and a picnic area with picnic tables, picnic chairs, water and picnic table is available.

Boaters can bring their own boat or rent one from the jetty, or they can rent another one from the jetty. Boating and fishing is also possible on the Small Lake, but campers must obtain a permit from the site manager. Outboard motors are limited to 10 H & P benches and engines are not allowed, but boating, fishing and camping are also allowed.

There is a handicapped accessible boat transfer station and moorings for the handicapped. Lake Murphysboro is also a popular spot for offshore fishing, thanks to its rolling hills and scenic views.

Whatever form of fishing you prefer, anglers will appreciate the natural beauty of the lake as well as the great fishing opportunities at the Small Lake.

Enjoy Lake Murphysboro State Park for fishing, hiking and, most importantly, picnics with your family and friends.

The disabled toilets are located at the campsites Big Oak and Water Lily Campsite, as well as on the east and west sides of the lake. ADA toilets are available in all accommodation, but for large groups there is no access to the toilets in the parking lot or other campsites. Parking is available in the main parking lots of Lake Murphysboro State Park and in the shelters.

Lake Murphysboro State Park is located in Jackson County on the north side of Rt. For those who prefer to explore nature on their own, the park has a variety of designated hiking trails and a large number of picnic spots.
