About Walnut Woods State Park
Walnut Woods covers a total of 1.5 million acres in the northern part of the state's park system. The park is covered by a 1.50 meter long, 1 kilometer wide and 1 kilometer deep stream, the largest of its kind in California.
The meandering of the river creates a valley with a walnut forest, and in the park over 90 species of birds have been identified, some of which can be identified by horseback riding, hiking, horseback riding or even birdwatching.
Although the height of the park is not much higher than the normal river level, constant changes can be observed. The most dramatic situation is where the river channel runs along the western edge of the park.
In the past, tons of earth, sand and gravel were removed by continuous digging and washing. In the mid-1980s, the most vulnerable areas along the banks were protected by special footbridges designed to minimise erosion.
There are 23 campsites, 8 of which have electricity, and the shady campsite is a popular place for family trips. The park has modern toilets, mobile homes and landfills; showers are available in the showers and there are a number of parks that have modern toilets, such as the mobile home landfill.
The campsites are nestled in shady trees and have gravel benches, picnic tables and fireplaces. A popular lodge is a prominent feature of the park, and reservations for the campsite can be made online or by phone at 1-888-743-5555. About half of them are still open for tents according to the motto "first come, first serve" but half are reserved.
It is a great place to camp, hike, fish, picnic and other outdoor activities, as well as a good place to rest and relax.
The park offers a shaded picnic area with barbecue tables, and the lodge can be rented on a reservation basis. The lodge was built in the 1930s from limestone brought from quarries in eastern Iowa and cut by hand - from coarse wood.
Walnut Woods is open all year round and is perfect for cross-country skiing, and many are close to the river for easy fishing. There are many hiking trails, bike paths, snowshoeing and snowmobiling tours, as well as a number of hiking trails.
