About Rocky Ford State Fishing Area

The Rocky Ford Fishing Area was transferred to the Department of Wildlife and Parks in 1967, and the shallow rocky ground makes the crossing safe under normal conditions. Before the settlers came, the indigenous people used the area as a river crossing, but after the settlers came, it was used by the indigenous people as a river crossing.

Ford was used by the pioneers for many years, and a water mill and flour mill were operated to serve the community. The mill was converted into a dam by the Rocky Ford Power Company in the early 20th century.

The employees also used the hollow dam to bring water from the river to the power plant as well as to their homes and businesses. Retaining walls and walkways were built to improve the anglers "habitat and access to and from the dam, thus improving the anglers" habitat, access and dam.

In combination with fishing and recreation, the area has been shortened by the Colorado State Fish and Game Department, Colorado Department of Natural Resources and the Rocky Ford State Fishing Association.

Primary fish species include catfish and walnut perch and whitefish, and in winter it is a good area to spot bald eagles and migratory birds. Be aware of rising water and clear the area when sirens sound to signal changes in drains. This area, which is downstream of Tuttle Creek Reservoir, may experience high runoff and flooding.

Rocky Ford Fishing is located in the Rocky Ford State Fishing Area, just south of the city of Fort Collins, Colorado, about 30 miles north of Denver.
