About Barren River Lake State Resort Park

The Louisville Corps of Engineers donated land to round out the park's boundaries, and the state bought an adjacent farm to expand it. On January 1st 1965 the plan to build a lake park became a reality and in 1966 a boat dock and a marina were built in the parks.

The Interior Department's Office of Recreation approved development projects totaling $3,469,000 for the development of Barren River Lake State Resort Park. Fifty percent of the estimated cost was funded by a federal grant of $1,734,500 and the rest by the state of Kentucky.

The Barren River Lake is located in one of the most scenic areas of Louisiana and Louie B. Nunn State Lodge was opened in 1971. The lodge overlooks a beautiful 10,000 hectare lake and hosts more than 1,500 visitors a year.

On the first weekend in June, the park hosts a festival celebrating Scottish heritage, attended by thousands of people every year.

Kentucky is not covered by vast forests, but in the south - in the central part of the state - an area of open grassland known as "fallow land" forms a heavily wooded area around it.

The Indians repeatedly burned down the forests that once covered this region to hunt and kill big game. These fires created an open savanna, which in turn attracted all kinds of game that fed on its lush grass.

Herds of buffalo migrated eastward across the Mississippi River to Illinois, and the open spaces of this wasteland also attracted settlers who found the treeless areas easy to cultivate. These herds came from the wasteland and multiplied by providing the Indians with food and clothing. Originally, the pioneers considered these treeless meadows barren due to lack of afforestation.

But they soon found that the soil was one of the best they had ever seen, with many wild flowers, wild grasses and wild animals, as well as a variety of plants and animals.

In 1798, Barren County became the 37th county in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and soon farming communities began colonizing the area. By 1815, the county had more than 1,000 square miles excavated to create the first public park, Green Warren State Park. The total brownfield area that forms part of Green and Warren counties is more than 2,500 square miles, with Kentucky's largest area - State Park itself - accounting for more than a third of that.

While Barren County has railroads, most of southern and central Kentucky remains isolated and behaves as if it would not have existed without railroads.

The need for development has become an issue for most civic and government organizations, but not as much in Barren County as in other parts of Kentucky.

The dam on the cart had the economic potential to boost tourism, but construction of a 146-foot dam over the river began in the 1960s. After its completion, the dam created a desolate river lake covering 10,000 hectares and a shoreline of 141 miles.

The dam was designed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service (NPS) and is under the auspices of the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
