Smallwood is named after William Smallwood, an officer in the Revolutionary War who was the 4th governor of Maryland. The house, which is described as his retreat, has been restored and is open to visitors for the first time in more than 100 years, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

In addition to the restored house, the 628-hectare park offers a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, kayaking, canoeing, boating and fishing. Sweden Point Marina has a boat ramp, kayak jetty, fishing jetty and picnic area. Maryland State Park is one of the largest national parks in the United States and the second largest in Maryland. Sweden Point Marina has partnered with the Maryland State Park System and the National Park Service to preserve the marina and its facilities.

Smallwood Retreat and Plantation House is open to the public and guided tours are provided by costumed teachers. Group tours are possible on request; information on planning a group trip can be obtained by calling 301 - 743 - 7613.

He was elected governor of Maryland in 1785 and later served in the Maryland Senate, and was appointed major general by Smallwood.

In addition to the restored house, the 628-acre park also features a variety of plantation houses that reflect Smallwood's gentleman-planter lifestyle. Occasionally there are bees, and the houses of the plantation reflect his lifestyle as a "gentleman planter."

Smallwood State Park was opened in September 1958 as a historic park and was named after General William Smallwood, Charles Countian. At that time, the park consisted of 30 hectares of land, including the original plantation house and a small part of the small village. Sweden Point Marina was not always known as Sweden Point, but rather as the location of Sweden's first naval base in the United States, the Swedish Point.

It was once called Sweetman's Landing and was built in an area known as Grinder's Wharf, which now has only a few exposed piles. The Schleifer family was responsible for the construction of the first brick grinding shop at Sweden Point Marina. They in turn used the grinding shop to ship bricks to wholesalers as well as to the US Army and Navy.

In the mid-19th century, the quay was used by the Washington Steamship Lines of the Potomac. The steamer collected water at Sweden Point Marina as it headed south into the Chesapeake Bay.

Under the canopy of the deciduous forest, fifteen family campsites are available with electricity. Four camper cabins can accommodate four, and 16 to 19 lie by the stream and have a view over the water. Two cabins can be equipped with heating and air conditioning and can accommodate up to six people.

Picnic tables, lampposts and fire rings are available at each location, and bathrooms with hot showers are also available. As soon as you enter the campsite, 20 to 21 people are on a large open area with views of the river and the creek, as well as the campsite itself.

Fish that could be caught include salmon, trout, mackerel, bluefin perch, pike, redfish and other fish species. You can also fish in the creek, as well as in the riverbed and creek bed, with a variety of different trout.

No fishing license is required in Chesapeake Bay, but a fishing license can be purchased at Sweden Point Marina Concessions. The Potomac is the main source of fishing in Smallwood State Park, and there is a license to fish.

All three gazebos are available by appointment, picnic tables and barbecues are also available at the park office at 301 - 743 - 7613 for a fee of $5 per person or $10 per family.

The path through Smallwood passes through many natural and historical sites, and the entire trail network is about 2 km long and has several marked exit points in case the hike becomes too strenuous.

Take Route 301 and turn left at the entrance to Smallwood State Park on the north side of the road, then right into the footpath parking lot.

The entrance to the park is approximately two miles to the right and is located at the intersection of Route 301 and the footpath parking lot at Smallwood State Park. Turn left onto the street, then right onto the Smallwood State Park parking lot and left into a parking lot for the small town of Smallwoods, about two miles south.
