About Hartwick Pines State Park

With an area of 9,672 hectares, Hartwick Pines is the largest national park on the Lower Peninsula. The park's rolling hills, built from ancient glacial deposits, dominate the city of Port Hedland and the northernmost part of the state's north and east coasts. A major feature of the park is its forest, which gives it its name and is home to some of Australia's largest and most diverse pine forests.

The park is rich in natural beauty and consists of different habitats, and in the different habitats it encompasses, there is a great variety of bird species, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds of prey. It is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm and on weekends and holidays from 9 am to 4 pm.

In 1927 Karen Michelson Hartwick purchased 8,000 hectares of land, including the growing white pine, from the Salling Hanson Company of Grayling for $1.5 million. Woman Hartwick was the owner of a wood processing plant on the site of the old Saling Hanson plant and was responsible for processing processed wood and producing wood for the family business.

Ms. Hartwick donated the land to the State of Michigan as part of a monument named after her son Edward, a member of the U.S. Army and a pioneer of logging in the region. She also requested that it be built in memory of her husband Edward, who died abroad in World War I.

In 1934 and 1935, a civil protection working group built two log cabins in the park to house the museum. Today, exhibits, artifacts, and photos are used to recreate the atmosphere of a lumberjack camp and tell the story of the huts and boys who turned Michigan's vast forests into wood. The photographs, which are shown in a series of photographs from the late 1930s and early 1940s, give visitors a sense of what life was like in wooden warehouses.

Ms Hartwick has also been involved in designing two lakes in the park, and Nels Michelson has a photo of him hurling a log from his log cabins into the forest.

Karen Hartwick applied to rename the former Alexander Lakes in her honor, but the state Geographic Names Authority felt there were already too many stars in Michigan's lakes and opted for Glory instead. Bright Lake and Glory Lake were named after the felling of oxen, and one of them was called Bright Star.

Today, only 49 hectares remain of the original 85 hectares, and today the park has been swept away by violent storms that have outlined almost half of all old pine trees.

Nestled among old trees, this area offers great views of the Hudson River and a variety of wildlife. The history of this state forest is told through the stories of its inhabitants, from the first settlers to the present day. School groups can book guided tours and programs by contacting the Visitor Center at (989) 348-2537.
