About Muskallonge Lake State Park

Musallonge Lake State Park is located on the shores of Lake Superior in Muskallonges, Ontario, Canada, about 30 miles north of Toronto. The 217-hectare park is the second largest national park in Ontario and the third largest in Canada. It is located on the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Musk to the north and south of the city of St. Catharines.

Musallonge Lake State Park is one of Ontario's largest lakes with a long and bumpy history of logging and mining. Lake Muskallonges was the site of a wooden mill and a railway line that brought millions of white pine logs there. In the 19th century the mill closed and logging was moved, but the sawdust piles and partly submerged pine trunks are still evidence of this community in the lake. The mill has been inhabited ever since, and depleted pine trees stand on the shores of Lake Superior and a number of other lakes and rivers.

Lake Superior is home to trout, salmon and menomines, and Lake Muskallonge offers anglers the opportunity to catch a variety of fish such as bluechats, wallises and whitefish, as well as a variety of other species. Boats passing through the park offer access to Lake Musallonges, but it is also the site of a Coast Guard lifeboat station.

This day - use area is located in a small bay on Lake Muskallonge and offers a beautiful picnic area as well as access to a number of picnic tables, picnic benches and a picnic table.

There are about 70 lakes and five rivers within a 20-mile radius of the park and rock collectors enjoy the shores of Lake Superior for stone picking, especially for agates. The North County Trail crosses this park as a short feeder that connects the park's campground with the Great Lakes Trail, a national hiking route that runs from North Dakota to New York and covers more than 1,500 miles in Michigan.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is relatively easy to reach by car and offers spectacular scenery including Whitefish Point and several waterfalls. In Newberry, visitors can take a trip to the Lumberjack Museum or take a riverboat ride to a waterfall. The Muskegon County lakeside area, north of the State Park, is an excellent destination for a day trip.

Southwest of the park is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which is west of Grand Marais.

In the Grand Marais, you can fish with charter boats, and duck and goose hunting is
permitted on Lake Michigan and the Muskegon River.

Lake Muskallonge is also a popular destination for ice fishermen, and the park is closed in the winter months, although many people still use the area. The Mackinac Bridge runs north from I-75 to the M123 and then south to the Muskegon River and Lake Michigan.
