The area around Indian Lake State Park is a playground for sports and recreational enthusiasts, and some parts of the lake are asphalted and ADA accessible. The Seney National Wildlife Refuge is the largest wildlife refuge in the United States and the second largest in North Carolina. It offers a variety of wildlife habitats as well as access to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Appalachian Trail and several hiking trails.

The mouth of Thompson Creek on the Manistique River is a seasonal hotspot for salmon and steelhead fishing. Thompson State Fish Hatchery is just two miles from the park and is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. From there take the M-149 (N-3 miles) to CR-42 and then the E-1 / 2 miles to the parks.
