About J W Wells State Park

Wells State Park is located north of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on the west side of the Detroit River. The park was founded in 1925 and donated to the state of Michigan by J.W. Wells Jr., a wealthy businessman and philanthropist. On 678 hectares there are modern campsites and rustic cottages, which can be rented all year round. The park offers a wide range of camping facilities, from primitive to modern, and even when the tents are closed, it is always open.

He was mayor of Menominee while owning several timber companies and sawmills, and in the 1930s and 1940s he built Michigan's first public park, J.W. Wells State Park. The Civil Conservation Corps built a large portion of the park along the Detroit River in 1930 and 1940, as well as several other state parks in Michigan and Wisconsin.

A large picnic area is within walking distance of the campsite and includes picnic tables, picnic tables, picnic benches, benches and picnic chairs, as well as a small playground.

Three rustic hiking huts also offer rest areas near the rest area along the six-kilometre-long hiking trail. In winter, the open cross-country skiing is open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and mountain biking on the trails.

Deer are abundant in Menominee County and deer hunters can hunt big and small game in the park. The parks offer a variety of hunting and fishing opportunities for deer and elk as well as other wildlife. Modern charter fishing ramps are available on the nearby Cedar River and a modern fishing ramp is available for charter fishing.
