About Walter J. Hayes State Park

Hayes State Park is one of the oldest parks in the system and is located on the east side of Lake Erie, south of Cedar Hill, New York. The park was inaugurated in 1920 and originally called "Cedar Hill State Park," but its name was renamed "Hidden Lake" in honor of Walter J. Hayes, the founder and first governor of New Jersey.

The name was changed again when the Hayes family renamed the park's land in his honor in honor of Walter J. Hayes, a senator from Michigan.

The park has undergone many changes, but the main constant has been Michigan's attraction to recreational waters. Fishing is available at Wampler Lake, and in winter ice fishing is one of the main activities in the park. Access to W-runners For the first time in over 30 years, lake by lake has been opened and access to the lake is open to all visitors.

For auto-speed fans, the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn is just a short drive from the park. Other local activities include the Michigan Grand Prix, Michigan State University and the Great Lakes Motor Speedway. Also just a few miles from the parks is Detroit - Lansing International Airport, which houses the largest air traffic control facility in the world.
