About Maumee Bay State Park

Maumee Bay State Park offers a unique natural environment created by the convergence of land and Lake Erie. Nestled in the woods, with a lodge, vacation homes and golf course, it is located on the banks of the Ohio River, just a few miles west of Toledo, in Maumees Bay State Park.

This precious gift is one of the largest freshwater waters in the world and reflects Ohio's diverse natural heritage. Maumee Bay State Park pays homage to Lake Erie with its unique combination of natural beauty and scenic beauty. The balance between leisure facilities and nature allows visitors to experience a diverse coastal environment.

Lake Erie's history began during the Ice Age, known as the Pleistocene, and the power of the ice can be seen throughout the lake area. Huge floes of ice are burrowing their way into the rocks of Ohio and burrowing their way to the surface. These rock surfaces, also known as glacial shells, are common, with large grooves that are both rare and impressive.

The wetlands of Maumee Bay offer a vibrant variety of natural wonders with a wide variety of bird species, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, as well as a diverse variety of plants and animals.

The wetlands are home to more species than any other habitat, including a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, as well as birds of prey such as red deer, Canada geese and red-legged ducks. The songbirds include the blue heron, warbler and many other species, but spring migrations bring many others with them, including colorful warblers. Over 300 species and birds can be seen in the wetlands, from Canada geese to red-haired ducks and blue-eyed jays.

The plants of the world are also diverse, with a variety of tree species, shrubs and grasses, as well as birds of prey such as the blue-eyed jay.

The park has several prairies, which offer visitors interested in different species and ecosystems an interpretative experience. The meadows of the park are populated by ringed pheasants, and birds of prey such as the blue-eyed jay, the red-breasted pussycat, the black-nosed plover and the white-footed sturgeon nest on the meadows.

The shores of Lake Erie have set the stage for a comeback for bald eagles in Ohio, and breeding pairs have been reported in the park, most of which is located on Lake Erie's western shore.

When the lake reaches its present size, more than 1000 bald eagle nesting sites will be built.

The Indians first settled in the area around the Great Black Swamp, near the present park. The area became known as the "Great Black Swamp" due to its colour, soil and dark shadows of trees. For many years, the swamp was a major obstacle to colonization In the West. Most settlers traveled through the swamps before reaching southern Michigan, except for a small group of settlers on the west bank of Lake Erie.

By the 1870s, the swamp was half-cleared, and laws were passed establishing a system of public ditches to drain the land. The area developed into an important agricultural region, but it largely disappeared in the 1880s, with the exception of a few small settlements on the western shore of Lake Erie. The major towns in the area were encircled on the edge of the swamps; none were in them, except Bowling Green.

The acquisition of Parkland began in 1974, and the area was officially declared a national park in 1975, with the creation of Maumee Bay National Park in 1976.

Deluxe cottages in the park are nestled in picturesque wetlands and scenic golf courses. PGA - certified professionals and staff run a professional golf shop, and lessons and golf trips can be organized. The 18-hole golf course at Maumee Bay State Park features sweeping grass fairways, greens and a variety of greens and bunkers, as well as scenic views of the bay.
