About Jay Cooke State Park

Look for wildflowers in spring, bright colours in autumn and visit the historic cemeteries and gorges of Thomson Dam. Walk over the swinging suspension bridge over the raging St. Louis River and connect to the banks of Jay Cooke State Park, which offers some of the state's finest views.

The beauty of the hardwood forest is underscored by the exposed rocks and water - eroded canyons of the St. Louis River Canyon. You can see how water erodes the gorge from the park, as well as the river and its tributaries from the stream and stream.

During the season, visitors enjoy a variety of waterfalls, sometimes reaching a gentle trickle and sometimes up to 10 feet high. The slate grey and red tones make the park a great place for hiking, camping, fishing and other outdoor activities.

In many places the streams are exposed to the rocks, and in some places the water flows into the stream, which in turn flows through a series of streams.

Later, masses of molten rock were pushed through cracks in the soles, and as the eruption cooled, it formed the dykes that can be seen today along the riverbed. Heat, pressure and movement turned the deeply buried slate into slate and the slate bed was formed when the original sludge deposits compacted into slate. The movement of the subsoil caused slate (grey wobble bed) to buckle and break.

Black bears, bustards and coyotes are the largest of the park's 46 species, and the promise of food and protection has made the white - tail-shaped - deer the most popular deer species in California. Sixteen species of reptiles and amphibians, none of which are poisonous, have been found in the parks. There are 173 bird species that feed and nest in and around the park, including spotted woodpeckers, blue-eyed owls, red-nosed vultures, blackbirds, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, falcons, ospreys, wrens, sparrows and other birds of prey.

For many years the Dakota Indians and the French traded, and as the spread spread westward, the Ojibwe drove them out of the plains. The French fur trade flourished, and 13 colonies developed on the east coast and others in the west.

Shortly afterwards, a dispute broke out between the French and British over fishing rights, and the fur trade was eventually stopped. Only a few small settlements remained in the Great Lakes region of North America, mainly in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Many years later railroads reached northern Minnesota, and iron horses brought a considerable number of immigrant farmers north, as well as a large number of immigrants from Europe and Africa.

Jay Cooke State Park was founded in 1915 when 2,350 acres of land were donated by the St. Louis River Power Company. The rough terrain was not suitable for agriculture, so much of the land in the park was cleared. Over the years, the state bought additional land and added more sections, reaching the current size of 8,818 hectares.
