About Braddock Bay State Park

Located west of Rochester, this unit includes Braddock Bay State Park and Rose Bay Wetlands, one of the largest wetlands in New York State. The brown wetlands provide excellent breeding, resting and feeding habitats for waterfowl. There is a marsh complex consisting of two large ponds, two small ponds and a large wetland area. Ponds in Br Paddock Bay connect to the lake via intermittent channels, which can clog and open up when currents from the lakes change the character of gravel and sand barriers.

Waterbirds that live along the Atlantic Flyway use the area for spring and autumn migrations, including frequently breeding birds such as the Great Blue Egret, the Great Squirrel Owl and frequent nest-bearers such as the Blue Egret and the Great Blue Egret.

The main objectives of the wildlife area are to maximise waterfowl production and provide high quality feeding and resting places for migratory waterfowl. Management includes improving swamp penetration and promoting the establishment of breeding islands for nesting and nesting water birds, as well as a variety of other activities.

Educational opportunities can be improved by promoting wetlands and related animal and plant species. This could include the installation of observation platforms and other educational facilities, as well as the establishment of educational programs. Other management activities may include the construction of forest duck nesting structures, controlled burns and the removal of invasive plants and animals.
