About Stewart State Forest
The state road 49 is an old railway bed that connected the iron furnaces and is now hewn into the forest. The forest is located in the east of the state, between the town of Stow and the town of Stewart, about 50 km south of London.
The forest was acquired by a large piece of land, the Leech Estate, which became state land in 1933 instead of taxes. Governor McAllister declared the forest a state forest in 1935, and in 1936, New York State Governor William E. McAllister officially declared it a state forest.
There are also several small areas where prairie grasses have settled, as well as several large grasslands. There are also many historical and cultural sites in the forest, including an area where charcoal was mined for charcoal, and the site of an ancient settlement.
Hunting is a traditional use of the forest and is used for training purposes for up to six months on the basis of a renewable permit. Other activities in the woods include hiking and mountain biking, as well as hunting, fishing, camping and other outdoor activities.
