About Morrow Mountain State Park

At first glance, the Uwharrie Mountains may seem like a mountainous mirage, but they are the heart of Morrow Mountain State Park, one of the largest state parks in North America. Surrounded by the remains of a once mighty mountain range, you can enjoy the gifts of nature in this beautiful state park, which offers some of the most beautiful views in Canada.
Recreation is plentiful at Lake Tillery and the Pee Dee River, and fishing, boating and swimming are popular pastimes.
There is only one word to describe Morrow Mountain State Park: beautiful, and there are cabins and tents for those who want to stay and take everything with them. Nature lovers can choose from a variety of hiking trails, which can be walked or cycled, as well as hiking and cycling.

The rangers regularly hold courses for children, adults and families, as well as for adults with special needs. Please contact the park office for more information on the organisation of group courses or for a list of available courses.

The Morrow Mountain Program introduces students to the basic geological processes of the Uwharrie Mountains. The programme is accompanied by a teacher's booklet and workshops, which are free of charge for teachers. Grades 5-7 develop a fundamental understanding of geology and geophysics and correlate it with the natural world around them, such as rocks, soils and vegetation.

European colonization began, and the discovery of artifacts in the area testifies to the importance of the Uwharrie Mountains as an important part of Canada's cultural heritage and history.

In the 1780s, the Scottish-Irish settler John Kirk built an important road linking public ferries to the area. Local legend tells the stories of famous personalities such as Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, King George III and Queen Mary II.

The development of the park began at the end of the 1950s, after a national park was established for the area. More than 3,000 acres of land have been acquired by Stanly County residents as part of a $1 million grant from the National Park Service.

The early development of the park in ownership was carried out in cooperation with the state and the federal government. Many of the facilities were built between 1937 and 1942 by a team led by the Stanly County Parks and Recreation Department and the National Park Service. The park was opened to the public in the summer of 1939, and additional facilities were added with state funds in 1950 and 1960.

Today, the park covers 4,742 hectares, with a total area of about 1,800 square miles (3,500 square kilometers) and a population of about 2,000 people.

The 1800s are still alive on Morrow Mountain, and history buffs can visit the old town of Morrow, the first town in Morrow County, as well as other historic sites in the park.

Dr. Kron was born in Prussia and emigrated to America in 1823, where he practiced medicine until he was 80. He is considered one of the first doctors to settle in the southern Piedmont of North Carolina and travelled long distances to care for the people in the region. A renowned horticulturist, he graduated with a degree in botany and a master's degree from the University of South Carolina.

The house, doctor's office, infirmary and greenhouse were reconstructed in the 1960s and appear similar to those of the 1870s. Six rustic family cottages offer the opportunity to escape from everyday life. Each cottage is located in wooded parts of the park and has its own garden, garden area or garden.

Each fully equipped cabin can accommodate up to six people and is easily accessible from the main park entrance on the west side of the road or from a car park in the south of the city.

In the summer months cabins must be rented during the week, but weekend rentals are accepted.

Please contact the parking office for reservations and fee information, as well as for further information about the cabin rental program.

Pets are not allowed in the cabins, please contact the park office for more information about pets and pet-friendly conditions. Choose from 106 camping pitches or caravans, and each campsite is equipped with a fully equipped kitchen, shower, toilet, showers, laundry, bathroom and laundry room.

Drinking water, modern toilets and showers are conveniently located and there is a connection between the campers. Garbage dumps are available in the parking lot of the park and at the entrance to the campground, and a garbage dump is available on the west side of Morrow Mountain State Park.

Camp Loop C offers a wide range of camping options, from single to multiple tents. Each campsite is available on the "first come, first served" principle and each pitch is subject to a modest fee. A maximum of six people can stay at each camp site, and at least four people per camp site per day.

Within the camp there is an amphitheatre, where interpreting programs are often held, and primitive campsites are only 2 km away from the park office.

A backpack - like a tent permit - is required and can be requested from the park staff, but is not required for camping on primitive campsites as long as it is available. There are toilets on every campsite and drinking water and other supplies must be brought to the campsite.

Groups can be organized in groups of up to four people, with at least three people per group participating. The campsites for each group are located on the river and are accessible via a gravel road.

The campsites are centrally located on the east side of the river, near the entrance to Morrow Mountain State Park, at the southern end of River Road.

Reservations are required for use of this area and a small fee is applicable. Click here for a reservation form for group camping. The plunge pool is the perfect place to cool off after a long hike, or a great place for an afternoon picnic. The pool is served by a built-in stone bathroom and the complex includes toilets, changing rooms and showers. Snacks and cold drinks are also available, and from June to Labor Day the swimming pool is accessible for disabled people.

There is a small fee for entry to the pool area and children can have fun next to the pool. A boat ramp at the end of the park road takes you to the water or children's playgrounds and play equipment can be purchased.

A paved parking lot to the left of the boathouse provides boats with a starting point to enjoy the surrounding facilities, and a small area is available for parking trailers. Rowing boats and canoes can be rented from the boathouses at the end of this car park.

There is a small ship, and throw your line in Tillery Lake from the boardwalk, but a fishing license from North Carolina is required. Wild fish include striped bass, bluefin, yellowfin tuna, redfish, blackbirds and other fish species.

Swimmers and large groups can use the pool picnic area, toilets are nearby, but larger groups may need to head to Morrow Mountain, where one of the park's two picnic spots is located. A picnic table, picnic chairs, picnic basket and picnic tables are available, as well as a small table and chairs in the water.

In this area there is a shelter with six tables, which was built by the construction and administrative authorities. The stone that forms the shelter comes from a nearby quarry and is one of the best picnic spots in the park.

The area also offers a fully accessible shelter with ten tables, which has access to toilets for wheelchair users. The picnic shelter can be reserved for a daily fee and accommodation is available in the picnic area. The accommodation is not reserved, but is available according to the principle "first come, first served."
