Although early Ohio provided vast water resources to Indians and settlers, there are very few natural lakes and ponds. Portage Lakes is named after the ancient Indian Portage Trail that connected the Tuscarawas River, which flows south from the Muskingum (Ohio) River to Lake Erie, and the Cuyahoga River, which flows north from Lake Erie to the Ohio River. This portage proved to be advantageous for Native Americans and early settlers, as transport to and from Lake Ontario and Ohio was possible with only eight miles of overland portage.
Portage Lakes State Park is located on the east side of Lake Erie, north of the Tuscarawas River and the Cuyahoga River. The water of the lake ends at Lake Ontario, and all of its water flows into the Ohio River, which flows into Lake Erie.
The area became an important trading post for settlers and Indians and served as a meeting place for American troops. During the War of 1812, it was a recognized milestone for the US Army and Navy, as well as for the location of the Portage Canal.
The city of Akron was founded in 1825 and was first settled by Irish workers and other people working on the Ohio Canal. After the canal was completed, the city flourished and the old Indian Wicket - Taking Path is a popular tourist attraction in Portage Lakes State Park.
The Blue Diamond Match Company in Akron was once used to make diamonds, gold, silver and other precious metals such as gold and platinum. Several important industries brought prosperity to the region, including the construction of the Ohio Canal, the steel industry, steel mills, iron ore mining, coal mining, and coal extraction.
Several Portage Lakes were built to maintain the canal at the required depth of four feet. The lakes were used for this purpose until the canals were abandoned in 1913, and since then they have been used to meet the water needs of local industry.
After Portage Lakes was transferred to the newly formed Ohio Department of Public Works in 1949, it maintained channels throughout the country, and part of the remaining channel in the Akron area is still accessible.
There are 74 campsites offering sunny and shady places, and latrines and landfills are available. Pet camping is allowed on designated pitches, as well as camping on the lakeside and in the main parking lot of the park.
The excellent beaches on the Turkish Lake offer relaxation for swimmers and sun-worshippers, and there are excellent hiking and cycling trails as well as changing rooms. Eight launch pads provide access to the lake and boats up to 400 are allowed in Portage Lakes.
Electric motors are allowed, and private marinas in the area offer boat rentals and fuel, as well as a private boat shop. The Nimisila reservoir, where you can sail on the lake, canoe, kayak or canoe and sail in its waters, is also available for rent.
There are five picnic areas throughout the park and two accommodation units are available, based on the "first come, first serve" principle: a picnic table and picnic area with picnic tables and chairs, and a campsite.
The Akron Astronomy Club leases land in the park to run a small observatory, and a five-kilometer (three-mile) trail leads visitors through the parks "forests and swamps.
Nearby Akron offers a variety of attractions, and special programs are seasonal, such as the Akron Astronomical Club and the Ohio State Museum.
The Perkins Mansion, home to John Brown, is maintained by the Summit County Historical Society, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame is located on Interstate 77 in Canton. A Tudor spectacle, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is a popular year-round destination - tours and special events. The Akron Rubber Museum, a museum that showcases the rubber industry, offers guided tours of the largest rubber factory in the world, as well as a variety of other exhibits.
The National Recreation Area covers 32,000 hectares, where hiking, picnicking, canoeing and cycling are popular activities. Quail Hollow State Park in Hartville offers a variety of programs, and nearby is Lake Erie National Wildlife Refuge, home to the Great Lakes National Park System.
Several state nature reserves offer insights into the unique peat bog vegetation. Jackson Bog is open daily, while Triangle Lake and Kent Bog are only allowed with permission. The two visitor centers are open day and night, as are Lake Erie State Park and Quail Hollow Nature Reserve.
