About Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park

Although it is a small park, Nelson - Kennedy Ledges offers an exciting experience for visitors with its rugged cliffs, picturesque views and scenic views. During the day it is a popular picnic and a popular walk during park use, but at night its dark and rough nature has become a hallmark of the park and its scenic beauty.

These remarkable sandstone formations were formed by the erosive forces of the wind and freezing water and are one of the few foothills still visited. Most outcrops elsewhere are covered by soil and rocks left behind by receding glaciers. These large boulders, known as seepage blocks, have fallen, eroding the soft layers and leaving a more resistant layer to form the outcrop above. This soft rock layer has worn down over the years due to erosion, glacier erosion and other natural forces.

These tangled rocks and shady cliffs are home to a variety of wildflowers, trees and ferns. The Spring Wild Flowers Show shows the spring beauty of heather blossoms and trillions and shows the rare red trillion that grows in large numbers on the rocky outcrops.

The Nelson - Kennedy region was always a popular holiday destination and was eventually under state protection. The state acquired land near Nelson Ledges in the 1940s and bought the area known as Kennedy Ledges in 1948. In 1948, Ohio State established Nelson and Kennedy Ledges State Park to preserve the area for future generations of Ohioans.
