Punderson is also Ohio's first winter sports park and offers countless recreational opportunities for visitors. Skiing is one of the most popular activities in the state, as are snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, climbing and snowboarding.

Punderson State Park is located on a glaciated plateau in the Ohio region and is buried under glacial ice. About 12,000 years ago, the last glacier to enter Ohio's Wisconsin border disappeared.

Punderson is the largest deep basin lake in Ohio and a basin lake that was formed when a large block of ice broke off from a glacier and created a depression filled with meltwater. This massive ice sheet owes its existence to the melting of the Great Lakes and the formation of Lake Erie.

The lake is home to a variety of waterfowl in their natural habitat, including Canada geese, ducks, eagles, owls and even eagle owls. Ohio's largest rodent, the beaver, is also seen in the lake, and white-tailed deer are found within the park boundaries. Punderson is spoiled with a variety of natural wonders thanks to the surrounding forest and its proximity to the Ohio River and the Great Lakes.

The vegetation in the park is as diverse as the animal populations, and these are only the wild flowers that inhabit the area. The park's lake takes its name from William Punderson, a young, industrious farmer who became the first permanent settler in Newbury Township in 1808. In 1807, Punterson built a small dam on what he called a "large pond" to use the sewage as a source of electricity for a water mill.

The Punderson family built a small estate on the edge of the bright blue lake and their house became a popular meeting place for family and friends. Holiday homes and even small hotels were built on the hills above the lake, and the area around Punterson Lake became a quiet resort offering a change from bustling Cleveland. Construction of an English Tudor mansion began in 1929, but was not completed until 1948.

Over the years, the wildlife department of the ODNR bought land and sea for hunting and fishing, and in 1951 the area was transferred to the Department of Parks and Recreation to develop it as a state park.

The manor house was completely rebuilt and opened to the public on 15 November 1956, and the structural renovations were completed in 1982. It is also challenged by the most experienced golfers, with a golf course, golf courses, a swimming pool, tennis courts and a tennis court.

Reservations are required for weekend games and are always advisable, but the Pro Shop offers all the necessary goods and snacks.

Campsite 201 is located on the site of a former Indian village and offers a variety of amenities such as water, electricity, water and sewage connections. Two fully-fledged supply points also have water / drainage connections, and two fully equipped Rent-A motorhome units are available for daily and weekly rentals during the season.

All have a covered veranda and access to a swimming pool, picnic area, picnic table, fireplace and picnic tables, as well as an outdoor shower and bathroom.

The 31 rooms offer a warm and intimate atmosphere, with an open kitchen, dining room, living room and bedroom.

Beautiful Punderson Lake invites boaters to explore the lake with its picturesque views of the Great Lakes and Lake Michigan. The property features a private pool, spa, tennis courts and an indoor / outdoor pool with spa.

Boat rental is available in the marina and for concessions, but only electric motors are allowed, and only on private land with a permit.

Punderson Lake and two smaller lakes are open for fishing, and anglers can catch a wide variety of fish, from small trout to large perches and small mouthfuls.

A valid fishing license is required for fishing in Punderson Lake and two of its smaller lakes, as well as for all other lakes in the park.

This picturesque area of the park is located on the west side of Punderson Lake, north of St. John's Lake. Fourteen kilometres of trails lead to some of the more interesting and scenic areas of this park.

The rural charm of Geauga County is highlighted in the Geaugas County History Museum in Burton. Inside the museum is a collection of village artifacts scattered throughout the Western Reserve region of northeastern Ohio.

A different kind of adventure awaits those visiting Six Flags World of Adventure, located just a few miles south of the park in the town of Burton, Ohio. Nearby is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a popular tourist destination for visitors from around the world. It offers beautiful day uses, including picnic areas and hiking trails for all visitors.
