Pike County is located in an area where prehistoric people in Ohio did many earthworks. One of the tribes, the Shawnee, made Pike County their home and they protected the land with power.
The area's colonization began after Chillicothe, Ohio's first capital, and some of the early historic buildings are still standing.
South of the park is the Eagers Inn, built in 1797 and located in the South Park. The inn was built along a route that ran from Limestone, Kentucky, to Chillicothe, and the limestone, now Maysville, was an important crossing over the Ohio River.
Many Kentucky settlers followed this passage on their way to the border, as did many of their descendants, like the descendants of the original settlers.
During the Civil War, the Confederate Army only managed to advance into Ohio once; General John H. Morgan crossed the Ohio River to Indiana and then rode north with the cavalry to Cincinnati, Ohio. The Morgan Raiders then crossed the southern part of the state by passing through what is now Pike Lake State Park.
Many of the men were eventually captured in southwestern Columbiana County near Salineville, but even during that historic period, families working in the valley found wounded soldiers collapsing in their fields. Some of these unconscious union soldiers never recovered, some even died. Less than five months later, he escaped from an Ohio prison and returned to the Confederacy.
The name of the unit and the hometown are never known, but the names of the hometowns of that unit are never known to us, except for some names in the state of Ohio and one in Pennsylvania.
Today, a memorial at the entrance to Pike Lake State Park in Morgantown, West Virginia, commemorates the graves of the victims of this tragic war. The present park was created by a warehouse in Ohio, which was built at the future Pike Lake near Morgantsown.
