About Indian Lake State Park Campground

Indian Lake offers a variety of water and leisure activities in its national park, Indian Lake State Park. Boating, fishing, skiing and camping are some of the highlights of this eclectic park.

The Indian Lake region was originally a collection of natural lakes along the Miami River. As the continental glaciers left Ohio, chunks of ice broke off as they melted, melted, and formed water - filled depressions known as cauldrons and lakes.

The result was shallow, swampy natural lakes that now cover an area of 640 hectares, including Indian Lake State Park and its adjacent basins and streams.

Indian Lake is a popular resting place for Canada geese and other migratory birds, many of which stay to nest in the summer. The current, much larger lake is located on the western edge of Indian Lake State Park, north of the park's main entrance.

Bald eagles once nested in the area, but are no longer found, and its proximity to the Miami River has made Indian Lake an important stop on the Indian trade route linking the Ohio River to Lake Erie. Indian tribes lived and hunted in this region, as early American history teaches us, as does the history of the lake itself.

History books tell of skirmishes and battles resulting from conflicts between Indians and new settlers, and generations of Indians followed this path and occupied the surrounding villages. In the early 19th century, white settlers from the western United States and other parts of the country came here. I know of no other place I have visited in the US but Indian Lake State Park, a national park in Ohio.

In the early 19th century, the canal system was the main means of transportation, and the lake was built as a feeder lake for the Miami and Erie canals. After the Ohio General Assembly passed a resolution in 1850 to use Indian Lake for sewer water, a wall was erected in Washington Township, where the Great Miami River began and stretched over 1,000 acres. The lake is located on the banks of the river, with a maximum depth of 4 meters and a height of 2,500 feet.

Old IndianLake was also built in the 1850s as a feeder lake to hold the required water depth of up to 4 meters.

Work began in 1851 but was not completed until 1860, and the total cost was $340,000, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Indian Lake, then known as Indian Lake Lewistown Reservoir, covered 6,334 acres in 1893 with a coastline of 29 miles. The Ohio General Assembly inaugurated the lake as a recreational area on April 9, 1898, under the name Indian Lake. Ironically, use of the sewer system declined after work on IndianLake was completed, and it became a popular vacation destination, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website.

Indian Lake, once known as "Midwest's Million Dollar Playground," has become a popular destination for the wealthy. In 1949, the old Department of Conservation was abolished and IndianLake became part of the newly created Department of Natural Resources, which is now the Ohio State Parks Department.

Beaches, boat moorings and jetties offer exclusive use to motorhomes, and scenic campsites offer amenities such as toilets, picnic tables, showers and toilets. On the northwest bank, the lake is bordered by the Indian River and the Ohio River, as well as by Lake Erie Canal and Lake Michigan.

A limited number of pet campsites are available and the group campsite can be reserved without prior arrangement. In addition, park groups can camp simultaneously in the park for up to six people, but only for a limited period of time per year.

Two mobile homes can be rented, and one unit can accommodate up to six people (one for four people), and twenty boat campsites are also available. These facilities include a boat ramp, a jetty and a boat parking lot, as well as access to the park's water park.

No time reservation is required, but units can be reserved up to two weeks before the opening of the park and a maximum of three weeks after the opening.

Swimmers can relax in the cool waters of Indian Lake, and there are beach campers on the campsite.

The 5800 hectare lake offers unlimited horsepower and has four boat ramps and moorings.

There are also four designated boat and bathing areas, and there is also a picnic area with swimming pool, picnic table and picnic tables.

Indian Lake is a free zone for everyone where skiing is popular, and Indian Lake State Park hosts the largest illuminated buoys in the world and the largest swimming pool in North America.

Picnickers can choose from a range of shaded areas for tables and barbecues, as well as picnic areas with picnic tables, picnic benches and picnic chairs.

Five accommodations can be reserved at the park office, and the western camp is located on the east side of the dam, just east of Pew Island. Access to Pew Island is via a perimeter and access to it via the causeway and campground.

An asphalt bike path is located on the west side of Indian Lake State Park, east of Pew Island. It is 3 miles long and the path offers spectacular views of Indian Lake. The cycle path can be used by walkers and joggers, but also by cyclists, runners and hikers.

Zane's Caverns is located on the west side of Indian Lake State Park, east of Pew Island, and illuminates the cave on two levels. Known for its cave pearl formation, this cave is known as one of the most famous cave formations in the United States and the second largest cave in North America.

Zane's Caverns, along with Ohio Cavern, charge a low admission fee, but the larger Ohio Caverns are the largest and charge an additional $5.00 per person per day.

Horse rental is available at Marmon Valley Farms on US 33, and the Mad River Mountain ski area is located on the west side of the park, north of Indian Lake State Park. West Liberty S.R. 245, located south of Indiana Lake State Park at the intersection of US-33 and S-R-245.

The house was built during the Civil War by the Piatt family and is known for its beautiful views of the Ohio River and Indian Lake. The lake itself borders West IndianLake, and camping and water sports are offered on the east and west sides of Indiana Lake State Park, as well as on the north and south sides.

The area offers hunting and bird watching opportunities, and northeast of the park is the wildlife department that operates the Indian Lake State Park Wildlife Management Area (IWMA), the largest wildlife management area in Ohio.

The state's Natural Areas and Preserves Division is one of the least affected forests in Ohio and the largest in the state. US 33 runs through the park, and State Route 36 runs from US 33 to US 31, then from US 30 to US 31.

The park is located on the west side of Indian Lake, north of the Ohio River, and US 33 will take you from Columbus, Ohio, to Columbus and Marysville.

Take I-75 North to State Route 274, turn left and enter the park on StateRoute 235, then turn right and take 274 to the west side of Indian Lake State Park, north of the Ohio River, and then right.
