About Lake Alma State Park

Lake Alma State Park is located in the midst of the rugged and scenic landscape of Ohio. A gentle stream winds through a wooded valley with a picturesque view of the Ohio River and its tributaries.

Lake Alma is located in the heart of the unpolished hills of Ohio, and these hills are part of the Appalachian Highlands. Most of these layers are sandstone, granite, limestone and other hard rock formations from the Appalachians.

It is a long time since this region first emerged from the ancient sea that once covered Ohio, and it has allowed the development of many different habitats. Today, it covers only one-third of Ohio's remaining forest area, which covers only about one-third of the state's land. Lake Alma is part of the second-growing forest that now covers this part of our state. In this area, the forest is mainly mixed oak, but it is a mixture of oak, birch, pine, pine and other native trees.

The forest floor is covered with a variety of ferns, mosses and lichens, and other valuable resources found in Lake Alma include large - flowering trillions of wild turkeys and a large number of birds. Wild turkeys have been reintroduced to this part of the state in recent years, making Vinton County the largest population of this species. This has increased the amount of farmland around the lake, as well as the number of cattle, sheep, horses, goats and horses.

Woodpeckers, owls, eagle owls and owls are native to the forest floor of Lake Alma State Park and the lake itself.

The Indian threat to Ohio territory paved the way for an agreement with the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. In the early days, a wilder land would have been hard to imagine, but the first geological surveys in Ohio showed that Vinton County was rich in mineral resources. More interesting is the history of Lake Alma State Park and its connection to the Ohio River.

Millstone, coal and iron ore provided the resources for thriving industries, and the charcoal industry fueled the region's growth, according to the Vinton County Historical Society.

Ohio was a leading producer of iron for equipment and weapons, and thousands of acres of forest were cleared to fuel the region's 46 furnaces.

Coal was a major Vinton County export at the time, and the Raccoon Creek mills helped reduce dependence on imported French and Pennsylvania pebbles. Racoons Creek Quarry is one of the largest iron ore mines in the United States and an important source of iron for the United States.

Vinton County was once one of the most densely wooded counties in the United States, but its importance has diminished over the centuries. Today, the timber industry is the most important business in the county, and the local economy continues to improve the quality of life for its residents and visitors to Lake Alma State Park.

Originally built in 1903 as a recreation area for Vinton County's timber industry, Lake Alma was originally designed for a theme park. The park is one of the oldest state parks in the USA and the only one in Ohio with a total area of 2,000 hectares.

The attraction only flourished until 1910 and was later bought by the City of Wellston for the city's water supply. The city has leased the land to the ODNR Parks and Recreation Department to operate it as a state park. Lake Alma offers 60 pitches for tents and caravans, a total of 2,000 hectares of land are available for camping.

Each pitch is wooded and has electricity, and all pitches have electricity, but pet tents are available at designated locations in the park, such as the beach, picnic area or parking lot.

The two public beaches are located on the north side of the lake and the two private beaches are located at the southern end of Lake Alma State Park. There is a picnic area with picnic tables, picnic benches and picnic chairs. Changing rooms, latrines and parking spaces are available in the park parking lot, as well as the picnic and beach parking spaces.

Perch, bluefish, cappie and catfish offer the best catches on the lake, but a valid Ohio fishing license is required. Only boats with electric motors are allowed on Lake Alma, and there is a boat mooring on the north-eastern shore of the lake.

There are three picnic huts in the park and there are picnic huts with the motto "First - come, first - served." On the north shore of the lake there is a picnic area with picnic tables, picnic chairs and tables.

Around four kilometres of hiking trails lead through hills and valleys and offer hikers picturesque views of the park. They start at the park entrance and end at the park exit, and they begin at the north shore of Lake Alma State Park, the lake and the trailhead.

Lake Katherine is a 147 hectare botanical reserve that is home to over 1,000 plant and animal species, as well as a variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians. In the lush forests and gorges of the reserve live numerous species, such as the Great Blue Heron, the Great Black Bear and many other species.

Many rare plants, including several native orchid species, can be found here, and the game preserve offers good hunting for rabbits, deer and squirrels. White perch and bluethroat offer the best catches, while the deep water and the deep ponds and streams of the lake offer excellent fishing opportunities.

Hiking trails and picnic areas are available, and petroglyphs were made in the area by Indians and Fort Ancient Indians. The Leo Petroglyph State Memorial is located southwest of the park at 28 County Road.

The complex includes a swimming pool, changing rooms, picnic areas and a picnic area with picnic tables. There is also a hanging area and an outdoor pool with pool table and picnic table.
